Pinion Shims

Took the Jeep (05 Rubi) into the dealer because of metal chunks in the rear diff. Turns out that it was rebuilt wrong (by the dealer) and they are replacing everything but the locker. Today they tell me they are waiting on pinion shims. They say they these shims are to adjust the pinion angle for the small amount of lift. They claim that the diff was set to factory specs and that caused the misalignment.

I have never heard of this problem or of shims that have anything to do with the pinion angle. I searched and haven't really come up with anything either. I only have a 2" lift right now and i plan on going to 4". Thoughts?

Cam bolts is most likely what they're referring too and their description is correct as you stated.

The pinion angle should be -1 degree

Yea they are just mixed up. Pretty sure it is cam bolts for the control arms. Pinion shims have nothing to do with the pinion angle.

Yea when i heard pinion shims to adjust pinion angle i thought i was going insane. The jeeps getting adjustable control arms so they are really just wasting their time.

With adjustable arms cam bolts aren't needed

Cam bolts to adjust the rear axle's pinion angle are a bad idea that usually will just slip after time. They work fine up front but not in the rear. Many have ended up having to weld them in place so they can hold the pinion angle as set.

Interesting. I'll tell them not to put them in. I had a feeling there was a reason no one puts these cam bolts in.

Like i said I'm getting adjustable control arms soon but until then i don't want to have to deal with any problems with these cam bolts.

Hmm. You know I was contemplating them up front until I got adjustable CA's. Would you reccommend them up front if I welded them jerry?

As was said in what you quoted Derp, front cam bolts work fine. That's even what 97 to early 99 TJs came with stock from the factory. It's rear aftermaraket cam bolts that cause problems.

But are you certain you even need to adjust the caster or pinion angles up front? The caster angle is normally fine after a lift and if your front driveshaft isn't vibrating, your front axle's pinion and caster angles are probably both fine as is.

Front pinion angle has always been a gray zone for me but thanks for clearing that up I'll leave it be! No vibes for me
