Lots of things can be rattling. Any idea about the general location to try and narrow it down?

2x, more info please... a rattle from the steering? does it got away at a certain speed? rattle from the engine? rattle from the interior? wheels maybe? while pressing the brakes? what aftermarket stuff do you have? - tire carrier? can you feel it in your feet, or in your hands? or you're just hearing it? very loud and very concerning? or like a rattle of something just jingling around like change in your center console?

is it your keys on the keychain?
Is it an automatic or manual?

Sorry for the lack of info. It is a manual. And the rattle sounds like its coming from directly below me when im sitting inside, maybe a little further back. Its coming somewhere from the bottom of the jeep.

What year Jeep? Older TJs had catalytic converters that were notorious for rattling after the ceramic elements inside broke up. Try pounding on it with a rubber mallet to see if it rattles inside like what you're hearing.

There is also the TSB for the 4wd shifter linkage. I guess that is more of a "knock" than a rattle though.

i have a very similar rattle, seems to come from the underside rear of the car (which btw is a 2001 6cyl 5spd wrangler) mine starts in 2nd gear and continues all the way through 5th. seems pretty slight can't hear it if it the window is up and the music is on, but if i roll down the window and turn the music down you can't miss it. i looked it up at AutoMD and they seem to suggest that it is the muffler or tailpipe, i plan on checking it out later tonight or tomorrow and i'll report back if i find anything out.

hope this helps

after crawling under my jeep this evening and trying to jostle stuff around (esp the muffler) i can tell it's definitely the loosest part on the under body, however i don't think i can shake it hard enough to simulate the vibration associated with driving, but after looking at it for a while i feel much better about the rattling because everything else seems nice and tight.

you know, I once had this problem of a thump coming from the back when I braked, I had the dealership look at it, and he showed me the bat that was rolling around in the back. I told him to forget I was ever there.

some pics

ok so i did some snooping and my 2001 wrangler sport doesn't have cv joints so i don't think this is my problem... that being said i took some pics under the car to see if anyone can help me identify the problem. first three are of the brackets that hold the tail pipe, the rubber unions are fairly loose and i suppose with enough vibration could be the source of the sound any input?

the second two are from a bar between the back two wheels (sway bar?) now i've been told that this is normally kinda lose and will rock back and forth (horizontally) however i've noticed that mine seems to be able to be moved vertically in the rubber piece, the nut and bolt aren't fully tight however i tried to loosen them and couldn't with a wrench.

could either of these be the source of my rattling sound?

i must say that this forum has been extremely helpful so far, lets see if you guys can do it again.
