Popping out of 1st gear

I have a 2000 Wrangler sport, 4.0, 5 spd w/ 75K. All stock, no lift, It keeps poping out of 1st gear when i start out. It doesnt happen all the time mabe 7 out of 10 times. No matter how I start out, either ez on the gas and clutch or heavy on it, it still pops out.
I found that if i push the clutch in and go into 2nd before I go to 1st and then start out, then it never pops out. So I guess problem solved, RIGHT !!!! Well, Im concerned if this is damaging something or not, could this be an ez fix or something more complicated and expensive.
Just want to see if anyone eles has experianced this issue and if so, some possible solutions........................Thanks !!!!

You have the nv3550 transmission which I haven't heard anything bad about. I don't think it's a common problem with that tranny. I doubt if you're making anything worse by 2nd to 1st before taking off. Maybe someone will chime in about a possible cause/fix. Good luck

Sounds like the linkage needs an adjustment.

None of our Jeep manual transmissions have a shifter linkage to adjust, only the transfer case does.

Egould5, has anyone (perhaps a previous owner) ever moved the console rearward and you're certain there is not even a 1" body lift installed?

I just recently got this problem with mine. It did it this morning but not once this afternoon on the way home from work. I also have a grinding sound while in 3rd and 5th gear. Im changing the fluid this week I hope that will fix the problem. This is my second transmission, first one went out about 76K miles and i now have 136K on my jeep.

I have a 2000 jeep wrangler 4.0 sport that has 160k on it with the same problems. It pops out of first and grinds going into 3rd. When I put it into first if I push my hand against the shifter it will kind of move back and forth before poping out. I found out the problem was in the shifter arm where it bolts onto the top of the trans there's a nylon ball that is supposed to drop in to hold the shiffter in gear. They get worn out and get flat spots causing them to pop out. To replace you will have to pull the counsel out and lower the trans a little to get to the bolts once you get it out you will see what I am takling about. When I was in the process I found it more worth it to put a short throw hurst shifter in it. That's is my recomendation the hurst is 10 times better than stock. Good luck

It is more than likely a AX15 in the 2000.

I believe they changed to the NV3550 in 2000 as that is what is in mine.

I've recently learned that the 97-00 tj wranglers may either have the AX-15 trans in it or the NV3550 in it. Depending on where the jeep was built depends on which trans you have which can be crucial to having problems with. If this helps at all im glad but if anyone else knows of any way that you can identify which trans you have that would be great.

All '97 to '99 TJ with the 4.0L had the AX-15. The NV3550 appeared with the 4.0L in 2000.
