I just bought a used 2002 Jeep TJ Wrangler 2 months ago and now I hear a popping sound in the front driver side of the tire. When I first drive my jeep i hear a sqeaking coming from the tire but later when it heats up it turns into a popping noise when I slow down to stop or turn the tire. I think it could be my hub bearing assembly. Any ideas? My jeep only has 54k miles. Could it be too soon for the hub bearing assembly to go out? Your help is greatly appreciated.
The Unit Bearings are sealed, no lube needed and yes I had one fail at 54k on the Odometer. So I replaced them both. Just a tip, when I did mine I had an u-joint in the axle fail one week later. When the Unit bearing is off the u-joint is easy to get to. You just slide the axle out.
I would say it is the u-joint in the axle shaft. With the wheel on the ground grab the axle shaft and see if the u-joint feels lose.
