Possible Transfer case issue?

My 98 Wrangler is making a knocking sound where the rear drive shaft connects to the transfer case at low speeds. I disconnected the shaft from the diff and there seems to be some slack in the shaft to transfer case connections. The yoke and shaft splines are fine.

Any advice?

Where is the "slack" exactly? Is it in the u-joint connection? Can you hold the output yoke steady and feel the play in the driveshaft? Do you get the same noise if you remove the rear shaft all together and drive on just the front shaft?

I have just changed out the rear drive shaft u joints and that did not fix it. We did disconnect the front shaft and drive just with thte back and the problem was still there. If you hold the rear shaft out disconnected from the diff, but connected to the transfer case there is some rotational play, about 1/4" each way. We thought that since the ujoints were new then something must be going in with the tcase.

Should I try to run on the front shaft? Will this prove if there is slack in the tcase chain?

thanks,

Sandman go underneath your jeep and start shaking the transfer case linkages.. it should knock a bit just make sure it's in 2wd while doing so. I had this problem also. It's the bushings on the ends of the links which eventually wear out and pop off. I got mine fixed for a bit less than 150 out the door. I am preatty sure i could have done it my self it's just it was too cold for me to try to do so. I believe they said the whole parts kit was 75 bucks.

Take a look here thats it.. http://www.4x4xplor.com/T-CaseTSB.html on mine they replaced everything there even the torque shaft

Triple88 is right on the money. However, the repair takes less than 30 minutes and well worth doing yourself. Parts kit in the link lists the parts for $19, I got them at my dealer for $13. Basic tools and follow the directions in the link and it will go smooth. I did this about 1.5 years ago and it's still in there strong.
