Possible Transmission trouble..please help!

Hi all, i have a 2000 tj sport 4.0 with a manual trans. Lately i have noticed that when i accelerate and get into 2nd gear on up through 5th i hear a whining noise that increases in pitch when i accelerate. When i press in the clutch the noise stops. When in neutral the noise stops. Anybody had this happen to them in the past? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance. By the way jeep has about 120K on the odometer.

Josh

When is the last time you either changed your trans fluid or checked the level?

Clutch in while at speed, noise stops?

Nuetral while at speed, noise stops?

Either of the above conditions with the engine at the same RPM as driving at speed...noise present?

Yes to all the above. If I have the clutch in no matter what speed the noise stops. If in neutral noise stops at speed. Only present while in gear. I check my trans fluid a bit ago and it's topped off.

Sounds to me like an internal bearing in the trans that is only making noise in a "loaded" condition.

Exactly what gear lube did you load your transmission with?

P.S. My 20 year old son will be hitting boot camp there at Lackland this December.

To be honest I had a guy at valvoline do it for me. I don't know what he put in there. I'm glad your sons coming through lackland. You should be very proud of him.
You tell him if he is ever in the hospital and he needs anything to look me up. SSgt Josh almendarez in dermatology clinic.

I would try some redline mt-90, if nothing changes its probably a bearing or something like others have said.

Geez! what kind of bearing could it be? Is this gonna be a whole trans fix?

Will do, thanks. I was at Lackland in '69 for a 2-week crypto school just before heading off for Vietnam and stopped by the clinic for my overseas innoculations. The medic that gave me my shots told me to stick around to watch the fun when a squadron of boots showed up for their shots. He made the first bunch in line look like they were going to faint when he "tested" the air-powered innoculation system by spraying a long powerful stream of something from the gun right in front of them. That stream must have gone 10'. I could barely keep from laughing out loud.

Throwout bearing isn't expensive itself, just labor intensive as you have to drop the transmission to swap it out. And while you have it dropped it is probably worth it to swap out the clutch and pressure plate if it is close to being worn out, and check the rear main seal as well. No sense doing all that work to just have to drop it again in a few thousand miles to change the rest.

my automatic is doing the same thing, whining noise under load then gone if I take my foot off the pedal. I have been trying to hunt this noise down for the last month. I replaced the rear axle bearings and seals based on another memebers recommendation but the noise was still there. Not all bad though one of the bearings sounded like it had sand in it when I pulled it out, so I am sure it was only a matter of time for those anyway. It sounds like I will be making a trip to my buddy's transmission shop and see what he tells me.
