Power steering box leaking

That pos Fram filter on my Jeep is causing the power steering to leak.

Leak appears to be coming from the gear box rather than the pump. I will investigate further tomorrow. Replacement of the gear box looks easy enough. Any problems with getting the column coupler off?

Been raining most of the day and haven't had a chance to look at the steering box but got some prices:
- Dealer has new ones for over $800.00 wholesale (yes, that's the "trade Price") and they are on back order, have been for a while. Any seal kits have been discontinued.
- Carquest has a remanufactured unit for $463.00 with a lifetime warranty. They also have kits available $27.00 for the pitman arm end and $42.00 for a complete kit.
- Another parts supplier (local and quoting AutoLine parts) has a remanufactured unit for $360.00, one year warranty, no kits available.

I am guessing the pitman arm seal is the problem. Can that be serviced without taking out the whole steering box? I may try some Luas to see if it makes any difference as a first step. The unit takes ATF+4.

I had my steering box leaking like crazy... I ordered an autozone replacement for $160 and it didn't fit, bolts didn't line up, nothing. Ended up going to a shop where I know the owner and he picked me up a rebuilt one for $260ish I believe.

the hardest part I had when replacing the steering box was diconecting and reconecting the power steering hoses. they were a pain to come out and they didn't fit on the new one. had to replace the power steering lines as well.

Go to the wreckers and get one out of a Durango. It will fit.

If the leak is just a slow seep you might try putting a tea spoon of brake fluid in you PS fluid. I have tried this on a truck and it stopped the leak. The brake fluid swells the seals, if the seal is in real bad shape replacement is the way to go.

Thanks for the feedback.
Got another look at it today. It's not the pitman arm end that's leaking, it's the input (steering column) end that's leaking. Seal kit for that is about $20.00.
Anybody done the seal replacement themselves? I may try cleaning the area up and putting some Lucas in the reservoir first though.

Speaking from experience... It's alot easier to change the whole steering box.
That will be the longest,most agravating $20.00 you ever spent.

The worse part will be getting the steering box off which is what I have to do regardless of what approach I take.
Here's a site which shows a Saginaw steering box rebuild. Doesn't look that bad. I'm just concerned about the input shaft seals. There's a truck repair center not far away. They will likely have the tools if I don't. Their rate is like $50.00 /hr.
Still way better than a remanufactured one with one year warranty and costing over $350.00 or one from a junk yard that may fail the next day, I'm thinking.

Stopped by at a truck repair center this morning. They do mostly work on their own vehicles, from passenger vehicles to heavy construction equipment, that are used in a very large landscaping business. Labor rate = $55.00 / hr.
They suggested complete replacement as they haven't had great luck with resealing due to the shafts being worn as well.

Apparently not for a 2003 TJ and newer.

The Durango box, they say, has to be from a 1998/99, or thereabouts, with a 318 ci motor. The only advantage is tighter steering ratio. As of 2003:

That's because previous to 03 and up, Jeep used an 800 series Saginaw small bore steering gear. The steering gear in a Durango is nothing more than a bigger bore Saginaw 808 series and it shares the same 4 bolt mounting pattern that the TJ uses with the exception of the deletion of 1 hole.

The 03 and up TJs use a German sourced ZF steering gear that is not directly interchangeable with previous steering gears used on the TJ.
