Probably need to start looking at a new motor

So I have a 2000 Wrangler with a 4.0 inline with 152,000 miles. Engine is starting to knock a little bit, knocks at idle, low & higher rpm's.
Any advice on what direction I should go with?

Maybe pulling the oil pan and inspecting the crank & rod bearings? Or should I start looking for a motor?

I had a quote for $2250.00 on a reconditioned long block, 12 month warranty, not including labor. I am able to install the motor on my own
Any advice would be welcomed

Cheapest motor in the world to rebuild/have rebuilt. For the cost of an old used motor you can have a nice fresh rebuild on yours. Plus you will still be numbers matching! You know how much value that adds to your jeep. Ok, maybe not but look into it.

Check for exhaust leaks around your manifold first before you go to far. Might just be that.

dlee - I've got the exact same issue with 159k. I can't find a leak in the manifold either. I'm about to drop the oil pan and do some looking around, but thought I would check in since your last post to see if you had any updates. Any luck with your issues?

I had an outfit look at it, they believe the valve guide is causing the noise issue, they mentioned this head is notorious for cracking, they recommended not rebuilding the head. The mechanic thought putting a rebuild head on a motor with 152,000 miles was a bad idea, they recommended going with a new Jeep/ Chrysler motor, not a crate motor. Any thoughts?

I would find the source of the noise, these engines last a very long time with proper maintenance and care. My 97 made 320,000 when she made a very serious noise I believe was a broken piston. For time and cost sake I went with a low mile engine from a Junk Yard and have been very pleased, I paid $600 and kept my old engine.

Apologize for the delay, just saw your post. Unfortunately I haven't had much of a chance to dig any further. Been out of the country working. I ordered an oil sample kit though and was going to send it off at the next oil change. I'll see what those results are before I start ripping things apart.
