Problem with the defroster in my jeep.

Last night it was raining all night then dropped below freezing (north of Chicago if anyone can relate) which gave me a nice jeep with frozen everything pretty much to drive home in. Let the car warm up for 6 or so minutes while I scraped off ice which surprisingly didn't help much. I had really thick ice all over.

Tried turning on the defroster to full blast but it when I felt the vent it seemed to be nothing coming out of it. I remember the PO telling me something was up with it and you'd hear a drop and it just wouldn't work.

Does anyone have any ideas why it wouldn't be working? Thanks!

Does the heater works out of the other vents? If so, I would check the vacuum actuators behind the dash , along with the vacuum lines under the hood for cracks or vacuum hose that may have come undone(especially the one by the manifold or reservoir)

Yes the heat works for feet and chest (body?) The only trouble is with the defrost for some reason. Would getting behind the dash be a big project? I'm asking because we just replaced the muffler last weekend and that ended up being a big project.

Pretty easy. Just remove the underdash panel under the steering wheel and look up from there for the actuators while you change the air settings slide levers. They should move.

Alright I removed the panels and it seems like all the actuators move and work. This will probably help. If I put defrost on the first dot of air flow it'll work, then put it on the second dot it'll work. But as soon as I hit the third dot I hear a drop and the air flow is restricted worse than the first dot. To reset it I turn it back to the first dot turn it so nothing is going, then back to defrost and it'll work up until the second dot.

So something is blocking it when I turn it to the third dot and I'm not sure of what.

You've probably got a leak in one of the hoses. The extra Air Force pushes the "door" down. This is why it works on the first two settings, but not the third and fourth.

See if you can manually move the defrost actuator for full movement and also check all attached mechanisms to the actuator is functioning properly. I would also thoroughly inspect all vacuum hoses under the hood. There's still a slim chance the actuator is bad.

I have this exact same problem! Fan on 1 or 2 and it seems OK. Three or four, then I hear something slam shut like a door or something, and flow is completely restricted from the windshield defroster, but the side window defrosters blow like crazy. I'll be checking on this this weekend. This forum rocks.
