Pros vs. Cons of CAT removal

Looking to get opinions and the pros and cons of removing the CAT from my exhaust system of my 98 TJ 4 cyl. I am running 35's with 4.10 gears. I live in VA so emissions testing is not of great concern.

- You are not really going to benift from anything.

- You will get replies that it is illegal by federal law (but who is enforcing that?)

- Why pump out greenhouse harmful emissions?

I guess he does not care if the children in his area have to breath his dirty exhaust. Maybe when his kids get cancer he will think twice.

The 4cyl has 2 cats, one right after the manifold and one right before the muffler. The one right before the muffler is not measured by the ECM (there is no O2 sensor after it) and therefore wont throw any codes if removed. The biggest CON I would say is the extra noise, the exhaust will be louder. You might see a very slight increase in performance but it will be minimal as the primary cat is still in place. I removed the 3rd cat on my I6 and plan to add a high flow one back in when funds allow.

For those commenting about air quality, in the rural parts of VA emissions inspections are not required as there are not enough people in the air to have a major impact on air quality. Also unless the kids are sucking on his tail pipe I don't see them getting cancer from it. Further more if the cat before the muffler was required for any reason its effectiveness would be measured by an O2 sensor after it so that the ECM would know when its bad. For all any of you know you are driving around with a useless cat since there is nothing to tell you its working properly.

I also live in Virginia. I removed my cat from my 4.0 v6 and it would no longer pass inspection without the cat. If you do a good weld job there is a chance they might not notice it and it will pass. But there is also a good chance your jeep will not pass inspection

Maybe "he" has posted this question for a reason!! If you have nothing of value to add to the original questions then feel free to leave the thread. That is the beauty of online forums. "You" don't even have to open this again!

I gutted mine on my old zj because it was all broken. Sounded nice afterwards with the flow master.

If you remove it, it might not pass. If you gut it, it probably will pass. Mine did for 2 years.

The main reason why I like the CAT is because without it, the exhaust stinks especially without the top on. All your clothes will smell like 1960. LOL

I would consider it a huge exaggeration.

In order to make that a valuable con the reply should have been more like..... Removing the CAT can cause you vehicle to emit cancer causing stuff into the air. Now that (if it were completely true) would have been a con. Saying that I don't care about children getting cancer unless its my own is far from a con.

It does. My 97 4 cyl smelled horrible after I hacked off the cat. Even the tailpipe on my Cali 03 4.0 manages to roll exhaust inside somehow.

To the people freaking out about cancer, I don't know about you but my parents survived half of the 50's, Vietnam, the muscle car era, and disco and were still able to pop me out with minimal side effects. The air today is much cleaner than it used to be. His Jeep won't kill a rainforest or his neighbors kid. If I can stand behind an idle super hornet for 12 hours a day and still run an 8 flat mile, there's still hope for tomorrows youth.
