Puddle of grease under my Jeep

ok, so I don't normally drive my Jeep more than 25 miles a trip. Its been running great for a long time and have not done any work on it recently. Well, the other day I had to take a friend to the airport, and the trip is about 50 miles each way. The Jeep rode fine and everything seem great until later that day when I had to go out again. I backed out of my driveway and notice a big spot of grease where I was parked. I pulled back into the driveway and shut off my Jeep and inspected underneath. The leak was coming from behind the skid plate and it was bubbly/frothy grease. I doesnt look like transmission fluid, its not red. It looks like grease from one of the differentials, but it came from up behind the skid plate.

Anyone seen this happen before? or know what this is?

After speaking with my friend, here is my theory........

Water may have gotten inside, and my normal trip length that I drive was never enough to get it hot enough to flash to steam, but when I drove 100miles to the airport the other day it got hot enough to make that water flash to steam then the pressure increased inside and forced some grease out of a seam or gasket somewhere. This is where the bubbly/frothy experience came from.....

Anyway, tell me if I am totally out to lunch or if you have any information that would help me.

Thanks.

There is nothing above the t-case skidplate that uses grease, other than the front driveshaft u-joint which only has a very small amount of grease inside.

So could this actually be gear lube from the transmission? Gear lube has the viscosity of engine oil, not grease though. What transmission do you have? Auto or manual?

Jerry, when I went home from work yesterday I checked it out again. Its a light brown color and really thick. I am pretty positive it is a grease. I am going to get up under there this weekend and remove that skid plate to try and pinpoint where it came from. I am leaving it parked till I know where it came from so I can correct the issue. I figure at the very least I will need to replace some lubricant somewhere.......cause it sure as hell doesnt belong on my driveway. lol

Jerry, over the weekend I was able to drop the skid plate and confirm that the leak is coming from the transfer case. I guess calling the fluid that came out of it "grease" wasnt a good description, because its not quite as thick as a grease. I also could tell that there was some water in it. There is a "weep hole" in the area where the transmission connects to the transfer case, and it looks to be coming from there. I believe that is the Front Output seal then that would probably have a leak there. Which would explain the water as well.

Any advice or any input you can give me is greatly appreciated.
