Puting Soft Top Up

I just bought some bestop tinted windows for my factory soft top. This afternoon I put it up for the first time ever. I've never put the soft top up before and I want to know if its normally going to take me this long all the time. It took me almost an hour!!! It was just so tight. Could it be the windows just needed to stretch out? I tried to look up some tutorials but all I could find was how to put the top down. Thank you for your replies!!!

From the tips I read up on this site, leaving the top out in the sun for abit really helps the stretch factor when installing. I also have yet to put on a soft top for my first time, I have a friend who use to own a JK(ended up having too many kids to fit in the jeep and traded for a mini-van ) is gonna help me out when the temperature is less cold which is still floating around 0 celcius mark for my area.

Thanks! It's supposed to be nicer tomorrow so hopefully it will stretch. I've also figured out im missing the rear tailgate bar and the door surrounds.

You might want to pick up all the missing parts before even installing anything. I think the only thing I might be missing is a few screws but that's super minor (I was lucky when I bought my 2001 TJ last summer, it came with both tops and all hardware.)

I would wait except I've got to have the top up with my daughters in it while I'm driving to church in the morning. It gets a little chilly.

Definitely gets easier.
I struggled the first few times but now can put it on/take it off in 10 minutes and that's taking my time - I don't rush anything.

As the others said, it's much easier when it's warmer.
The order you do everything is also critical.

I always take my softtop off completely so the first thing I do is
- Reattach the bows to the rollbar brackets.
- Unfold the top up and sit the catches in the slots in the windshield frame - Do not clamp these down at this point
- Attach sail panels at the rear corners of the tub
-Now you can clamp down the catches on the windshield frame.
- Zip in side windows
-Zip in rear window
-Clip 'drip retainer rails' into the door surrounds.

You can get by without the door surrounds and that tailgate bar but it's gonna fit loose.

See wesboy's post. those drip retainer rails won't have anything to clip into without the surrounds plus I think the foreward edge of the top clips into them as well.

That rear bar also helps form a seal on the back window and without it the window will flop around. This puts extra stress on the zipper which is already a pain to work with.

The top will go up but it isn't going to fit right and will let some air in. Your daughters might want some jackets just in case

But yeah the soft tops take some time to get used to. Probably took me near an hour the first time too. That rear window is hard to get the zipper started and still takes me 10-15 minutes sometimes.

Also if you still have the owners manual, mine had a pretty detailed section on putting up/down the soft top. Also removal/install section. I had to look at the manual because I couldn't even figure out how to put the top down the first time.

Thank you guys so much! I'll just have to make do with what I have for now. After this morning I'm taking the top back down and I will try to find some cheap door surrounds and rear tailgate bar. Thanks again!
