putting into 4 low

hello all,

I dont use my 4 low range very often but the other day I couldn't resist popping it in to play around in my friends driveway( its ridiculously steep) Anyways i got it into 4 low and let eh jeep do its thing, but when i went to put it back out of 4 lo to 2 hi there was a bad clunk sound. It also felt as tho it wasn't back into 2 hi completely so I had to play with it some more until it finally went back in. What the best way to go into/out of the 4 lo range? I dont want to cause any damage to my transfer case etc by being too much of a noob

thanks

I just stop completely put it in neutral and shift it into or out of 4lo. Some people say go 2-3 mph so it goes into 4 low easily but i always get a grinding noise when i do that.
But just make sure to stop completly and have it in neutral and mabye even push the clutch in like i do to be extra safe.
4 low isnt like 4 high, 4 high you can shift in and out of anytime you want.

The reason the manual says it might help if you are rolling is to synchronize the gears... so it's pretty much a crap shoot as to which way will be easier at a given time.. Just know you aren't the only one grinding gears....

Whenever I come out of 4 (either) I always come to a stop and then reverse for about 10 feet. Not sure if I need to but a bunch of buddies with Jeeps told me to do that so I do.

Yep, that's a good tip, for all 4x4's. Used to have to do it in my Tahoe to make sure it disengaged...

Like InfernoGirl said, you want to make sure that it has disengaged.

I had a buddy who blew out his front drive shaft during the summer because he had not disengaged his drive shaft completley. The last time he had used his 4wd was during the previous winter.

He had no clue there was anything wrong with it until it snapped loose one morning.

I was messing with this yesterday while testing my 4WD for the first time.

I experienced the same grinding issue when moving 2-3 mph and moving from 4H to 4L.

What worked best for me is to switch into 4L while stopped. When switching back to 4H I had to be rolling 2-3 mph for it to get out of 4L.
