Rattling under the hood

I have a rattle thats started in the last 2 weeks thats worrying me a little. Im making a trip to the keys in a couple weeks so I want to make sure Im not going to send something thru the hood on the way... ive already taken a ratchet around the area and nothing seems to be loose.

I have a 2004 2.4L TJ, no mods except wheels/tires which came with it when i bought it a year and a half ago.

It started out as a click, all of a sudden. I thought maybe I got hold of some bad gas so I got some different gas on the next tank and the sound actually changed... now its just the rattling. and im not sure if the 2 sounds are even related.

From what I can tell (keep in mind i dont know much about this stuff...) its a rattle, metal on metal sounding, like something is loose and it sounds like its coming from the alternator area. Its pretty constant whether moving or at idle, but more so when idling (although im not sure if im just not able to hear it when moving or not). It might even be normal for all i know...

any ideas? Thanks all!

My 97 had a rattle that turned out to be the airfilter housing to fender bolts. Couldnt find it but I took it aprt when I did my Throttle body and sure enough one Nut was gone and the others were loose.

I had a noise on my 95zj with 42re trans and 231tc. It was a rattle on hills when the tranny would kick down and at idle it was a ticking, sounded like a lifter but from the bottom of the engine, that would quit when I put it in park. Turns out it was the access cover on the lower front of the bellhousing. It was loose. Got torn off wheeling and no noise since
It just goes to show you can't always tell the depth of the well by the length of the handle on the pump.

Have you been in deep water lately? There is a chance that your catalytic convertor is busted.

Thanks for the posts! The Air filter is on the pass side, the alternator is more towrads the driver side and way above and in front of the bell housing but I checked those areas anyway and they seem to be fine. And the cat converter, im not even sure where that is. I think on the pass side too and i havent been in any deep water. :-(
