Re-gearing question

So to start off I have a '98 4 banger 5 speed wrangler running 31's. I know if I "wanted more power then I shoulda got a 4.0" I understand that but I was wondering if I put 4.56 or 4.88 gears would it give me better pull on hills? But would it decrease my fuel mileage?

Depends on your driving, if your not doing highway then go 4.88, but I'm doing 4.88 anyway because I always end up going bigger in the long run

Well it's my daily driver/weekend warrior but I will be going to 33's in the future so I was definitely thinking 4.88's. What's it gonna do to my fuel mileage with 31's?

It's gonna lower your fuel mileage, depending on how your drive. I'd think it'd be the same concept for jeeps as it is in the wold of sports cars. But when you add gears what'll happen is(just throwing random numbers out) you cruise around town in 3rd gear at 35 MPH, well what ever your current RPM is with stock gears, it'll be quite a bit hire with a gear ration of 4:88, thus not as good gas mileage, but of course you could just put it into 4th. Like I said, just throwing numbers out there, I have no idea what the speed to RPM ratio is on a jeep. You'll have more get up and go but a loss in top end speed.

Use this link to determine what your RPM's at a given speed will be. I have a 2.5L too.

I went to 4.88'S with 30 X 9.5's, and have never looked back. I turn about 3000 RPM's in 5th at 65 MPH. My Jeep is happy doing that. Around town the difference in drivability is substantial. A lot of times I can start out in 2nd gear. Mileage (adjusted) with a lot of highway has been around 17-18 MPG.

Hope this helps.

Man that helps out a lot. As long as yours is a 4 cylinder 5 speed lol
