Rear brakes locked up.

Greetings all, I just replaced the rear brake shoes, hardware, drums and one wheel cylinder on my 1997 Sahara. When I was done I noticed the drums would not spin. I had to crack the bleeder valve and the drums immediately spun freely. I started it up again and stepped on the brakes and the drums locked up again. Has this happened to anyone else?

Any thoughts what could be causing this?

Was that with the rim mounted back up on it? Too make sure the drum was not tweaking from not being held tight with the rim mounted to it.
Does both sides do it or just one side?
When you cracked the bleeder, did the fluid squirt out, like it had some pressure?

locks up with or without the rims. It freed up over nite, but locked back up when I stepped on the brakes again. Fluid squirts out like it was under pressure.

Possibly your brake hose between the body line and the axle is bad. From the sound that it freed up over night and the squirt, i would put it at that, since the hose if expanded inside from being bad would hold the pressure, but slowly release over time.

Push the brakes again and let off, if it locks up, loosen the line to the rear brakes at the Master cylinder and see if it act like it has pressure there and if the brakes release might be the master cylinder. But If they are still stuck after that, i would guess it is the hose.

Also check for any kinks in the steel line in case something got bent.

Just a question, you have a lift, is the flexible brake line to the axle, factory or after market?
You mention in your info that you have an unknown lift, so was wondering it it was still a factory brake hose and maybe it was too short for the lift and maybe it got slightly pulled on when the axle went just a little further then the hose would go and maybe bent the steel line where connect to the rear hose at the body. just something to look at also.

That is a possibility. I just bought the Jeep and trying to fix things on the list to pass State inspection. The paperwork I got with it shows that a used rear was installed. I do know this has been an ongoing problem. When I pulled off the passenger drum off, the lining was completely worn off, the drum was severely scored, everything was covered in brake fluid and the wheel cylinder was fully extended with the boots torn.

So I was driving to get my jeep reinspected and the rear brakes were locking up again.
Got it home. cracked rear wheel cylinders one at at time and the brake free up. cracked the master cylinder, the distribution block and the connection before the rear body line to axle and it stayed locked up. Put in a new rear body hose to axle and the brakes are now fine. Hopefully this will result in more mpg since the brakes have been dragging a long time. Thanks for all your help!
