Rear Diff?

You guys/girls know a heck of a lot more than I do..
Anyone have any idea what rear diff I have and what it's pluses and minuses are?

Thats a Dana 35. I don't know of any pluses for it. They're weak they break easy if you're careless they have C-Clip axles. You can build them up but they're still kinda weak. The ring size is the biggest weak link though.

While ring gears do fail in the Dana 35c, far more axleshafts fail than ring gears in that particular axle. I've had to help a bunch of Jeepers with busted Dana 35c axleshafts but I haven't yet run across one where the ring gear failed first. Not saying it doesn't happen.

Well this one isn't gonna be for crawling for a long time.. it's my everyday driver right now.. I plan on running it for a few years and then buying a new one so I can put some work into this. The most I am going to do to it is new rims & tires.. possibly a 2" BB..

It should be ok for stuff like that.. uhh.. right?

Yeah, you'll be fine staying under 33's and not putting a locker in that 35.

Jerry, I agree with you on the shafts. Matter of fact the majority of D35 R&P failures I've seen have been a direct result of the shafts breaking.

I have a d35. Is it worth it to upgrade to a stronger 27spline shaft?Also the only way to run 30 splines is a locker right?

Everyone has to evaluate their own situation. But IMO no, it's just throwing away good money to put any upgrades on the D35.

Spend the little extra money and get a D44 or a Ford8.8 even if you have to weld on brackets you'd be better off in the long run

When are you more likly to break it in the mud or on the rocks. I'll end up more in mud but on some rocks to.

I kind of want to just beef it up a little and then leave it alone and if it breaks get a d44.

There's no inexpensive way to beef up a Dana 35c. The only effective way of beefing it up is with a 30 spline Super 35 kit which is what, $900?

I read that alot of times the d35c axles break because the axle tubes bend because they are weak. What if I trussed the axle would this help? How would I go about doing something like this?

The TJ's Dana 44 and Dana 35c both use the exact same diameter and thickness of axle tubes. If there is any bending, it's only due to the D35c having a weaker housing to hang onto the axletubes with. The axle's chief weakness is still its small diameter 27 spline non-hardened OE axleshafts.

So nope, it's not worth trussing the D35c.

So this isn't true????
It’s been our experience that the Dana 35 flexes quite a bit. While replacing a broken 27-spline shaft in the field with the suspension twisted up, we were barely able to pound the new shaft into place, so we figured the housing was bent. Once we got back to the shop and put the Jeep on a hoist, the shaft would slide in and out easily. We believe that the flexing can cause locker and shaft damage. An axle truss will help combat the housing flex and possibly prolong the life of the Dana 35 assembly in more abusive conditions

That's exactly what Jerry said. The housing is what flexes allowing the tubes to move around and bend. Even the almight JP Magazine can only say that trussing will "Possibly" extend the life of the D35.

The trussing will help but why bother? Once you add cash to the 35 it's gone because it hardly effects the value of the assembly. Add $300 and get back maybe $50. An 8.8 or 44 is actually valuable if you decide to upgrade further, later.
Save your money and do it right the first time. A 96 up Exploder 8.8" is about $350. Yeah..you'll need to do a bit of work and spend some cash but it's a good investment. I've heard plenty of people talk up their Dana 35's and later regret building it. I've never heard anyone that has built up a 8.8" or 44 wish that he had kept their 35.
