Hi guys I just changed the rear diff and transfer case fluids and I'm just wondering if I did the rear diff right. I filled it up to just about overflowing it was just seeping out of the fill hole on the rear diff it's a Dana 35 if that helps with trac lock. I used Castrol 80/90 weight for limited slip diffs.
okay great thanks guys. i was going to change the front diff also but i might have someone do it since i can not get the fill plug out. I tried penetrant and let it soak for the time i was changing the rear diff and transfer case but it didn't work i actually broke the end off on one of my 3 inch extensions. I am going to spray some on it tomorrow after work and let it soak overnight to see if that helps if not i will have to take somewhere to have it done. I even tried using a hammer to knock it loose but no go.
I was just thinking about that also dextreme. If I do decide to do it what would be a good stock diff cover to get? I don't want to go too expensive. I saw some on o'reilly's auto parts page but it didn't look like a stock one. I have a friend that may help me he's a former jeep owner and a regular customer at where i work so i might ask him to do it at his shop. I will also look at rock auto too and see what they have. thanks
I agree with everyone here. If the jeep is not your DD, I would just remove the cover, clean it up and then see if you can remove the plug. Worse case is you can't and you end up buying another cover, nest case is with a little penetrating lube and maybe some heat you can get it out and you don't buy a cover. As far as price goes, (and I know this due to just having to replace mine), They are going to run between $40 dollars to over $150 dollars. I ended up going with a Aluminum one from G2 axle and it was like $85 dollars on Amazon. A little bit more pricey but it fit great and will keep the gears a bit cooler than the stock one. Good luck in getting the plug out.
okay thanks guys. Andy my jeep is my dd so i will either try to get out this afternoon or next week I have a couple days off next week so might work on it then.
update:I have good news I was able to break the plug loose and change the fluid. I just sprayed liquid wrench on it quite liberally and used a hammer. I used the top of the hammer sideways pounding on the ratchet while pushing on it and that worked great. Thanks for all the great advice. I will have to replace the plug the next time around but for now its fine and not rounded off. It looks like someone put some kind of sealant on it but i didn't though. I also think someone overfilled it too cause it drained out of the fill hole for almost a minute if that's possible i'm not sure. But i filled it to about where it was just started to seep out then i stopped. i would say about a 1.25 maybe or a little more. Anyways i got it done.
But you did pull the whole cover off and clean out the case, correct? Was the color of the oil? If it was milky, it could have been overfull due to water contamination.
no I didn't and the oil was black it had no signs of water in it at all. The oil was like dark brown almost black and it didn't have any hint of water in it. trust me if it had any hint of water in it i would have pulled the cover off. just in case you were wondering i used a hand transfer pump to get the fluid out.
