Rear drum brakes.

Can anyone elaborate what is involved in doing the rear brakes on a 2000 sahara? I have done rear drums before a while ago on a truck. It was a real PITA. My chilton book shows two pages of pic's to do them. Is there anything special I need to know or look for? I may tackle it tomm. or wednesday. I already bought the shoes. Thanks in advance.

My YJ ran over 20k on the original shoes, my TJ has over 79k on the original shoes. Do they really need them or do you just want to replace them. I have th FSM if you want it. PM me with your year.

I am curious about this as well, I have 120k on the clock and have never done the rear brakes since it was new. They still work fine, never any issues.

How does one know when their brakes are going bad? My wifes honda's brakes were shot, but I never noticed any problems with the brakes.

one suggestion for anyone not familiar with drum brakes.

remove both rear wheels, and drums. then only tear down one brake assembly at a time...this way you have a reference as to what it should look like when it goes back together.

Note the orientation of the adjustment spindle and all the springs.

I have found that the hardest part is getting the drums off in most cases. Buy the couple tools for removing and installing the springs , the one for installing the little keepers that hold the shoes to the backing plate and an adjuster spoon .They are not required but like any other job the right tools make it a lot easier . I always buy a hardware kit and a new selfadjuster cables before I start . The selfadjuster cable has a spring on it which most feel is not strong enough to begin with and the cable will often be broke in two when you remove the drum initially . Its not as bad as it looks just follow the instructions from the site I posted .

Ok, I just finished them today. Took me about an hour and 15. Last time I did drums was about 20 + years ago. They were not hard at all. BUT-the shoes were fine!! Hardly any wear. The jeep has 126k on it. How can this be? I have been hearing some squeling every once in awhile. Yesturday while taking the boat out I felt grinding. I swore it was comeing from the back. I did the front rotors and pads about 5 months ago. I did notice that there is some type of gear with teeth behind the hub. There's a magnatic like bar that is real close to it.= anti-lock brakes. The gear looks like the bar rubs against it some times. There's dirt cleaned off on it where the bar would hit. Is it possible that the grinding I heard is coming from this? I figure the boat is a bit heavy and when stoping, there's extra weight pushing the jeep, so I figure the anti-lock brakes may feel this a little bit. Any thoughts??

My typo, my YJ ran over 200K on rear shoes. I had a toyota sr5 pickup that went almost 200k on rear shoes.

It n=must be becaues there is no weight on the rear.

sounds like you are describing one of the abs parts . I think that may be the tone ring , not sure being my TJ don't have it so I never really got into it .
