Rear End qusstion

Hello there, I,m new here and have a rather silly question. If I upgrade to 488 ring and pinion gears in my 97 TJ -do I have to change the spyder gears as well...I was snow wheeling today in my stocker w/ 31 10 50 - and was planning to lock and lift - but think that I broke my rear end today.

Thank You in advance

Searching will be time well spent. This forum has a lot of good info on it to answer your questions. Welcome aboard.

First things first... Why do you think you broke something in the rear? What axle do you have? What gear ratio do you current have?

Depends on what gears are in your axle now, but you will most likely need to change the entire inner assembly in the axle. You will also need to do the same in the front so that you have the same ratio front and rear.

Searching I will do,
I like this form - I am currently running a D35 in the rear with. 3:55 driving on pavement there is a loud clack from from time to time coming from the rear - similar to the last time when it just went out completely.

The reason for the question was do that I can start pricing out a gear change so that I can use 33's when I lift it. Also and IF all I brokeis a tooth on the ring gear am I looking at replacing the entire set of gears inside the transfer case.

Thank You.

Sounds like you blew up some spyder gear teeth. I did the same thing on some trails.

Your going to have to get a 3.73 and up carrier to fit 4.88 gears.

I would not spend a penny fixing the d35. You can put a ford 8.8 in there for the price of building the d35 and have 10times better axle.

Finding a matched set of axles out of TJ with 3.73:1 gears would be the quickest, easiest way to get the re-gearing. If you look longer you can get a D44 rear with trac-lock and the matched gear front end. Bolt on re-gearing and rear axle upgrade at the same time.
