Rear facing Seat

I'm thinking about turning my back seat around so it will face backwards. Hopefully this will be convient when I'm surf fishing or just chillin' at the beach!! Anyhow, how do I go about doing this? Is it worth the trouble? and could I change the seatbelts to lap belts? Lots of questions....

Thanks for any help!!!

Britt

just try and take out the bracket on the bottom of the floor with a torx bit and flip em around , im not sure how you would do the seatbelts though.

Do you plan on driving w/ it backwards? If not, I'd just quickly and easily remove the seat and flip it around for beach time.

Your knees would be in your chest
just take it out and throw in a lounge
chair
I just open tail gate and sit or if topless
just a folding chair

It should work unless the tub is recessed where the torx bolts are, even then you might be able to swap out the front 2 brackets with the rear and a do a little switcharoo... or you just take the seat out and flip it around it just might not be stable

Check your local laws about rear facing seats as some states don't allow them any more.

Right. Remember that the floor is lower when you're facing forwards than it will be when you're backwards.

Have you tried turning the seat around to see if it will even fit? Perhaps in an Unlimited but I don't know if you will have any leg room in the standard TJ. Don't forget that both the front seats and rear seats lean back about 15 degrees, and when you put them back to back you lose a lot of that space by having the backs pressed up against each other. I would be curious to see how much leg space you can salvage out of something like this.

And as for seat belts, It should be possible, since the shoulder belt pulley and retractor are both attached to the roll-cage on the rear, just move them to the front roll cage (where the front belt assemblies are). You may need to rig up some re-inforcements for the buckle attachment though, if you are moving it. You don't want that to fail (esp in a roll-over!)

The other thing to consider is that you ensure that the seat belt assemblies are put in backwards if you reverse the seat. Seat belts are not designed to lock in a collision from the rear, so if you keep them the way they are then if (heaven forbid) you get rear-ended the seat belts will not lock and your passengers will have an unwelcome meeting of face and rear-window. This is not a concern in a frontal collision though, since they are facing backwards, any momentum will just push them into the back of the seat. (just like if you were rear-ended and facing forwards, the seat absorbs the impact, not the seatbelt.

Good luck, let us know what you decide to do

Remember the Subaru Brat? I always liked these seats, but they seemed dangerous even in the 70's. But at least something like this would give you some leg room.

Thanks for all the help guys! Ya'll are bringing up some good points...leg room, safety, state laws etc. Since I do not intend for any passengers to have to ride backwards I probabaly will leave the seat alone. I only wanted to do this for beach riding and surf fishing. I am going to look more into this in the up coming weekend. If I figure something out about the leg room I will post pictures and keep you updated. Thanks again!!

you can seriously just always take the seat off the brackets which takes 3 minutes and then turn the seat around.

Even better........nix the backseat and throw in a bean bag chair. The ultimate beach lounge......
