Well it seems like my synchronizers in my tranny are going out. I was going to just get a junkyard one but none of the ones in my area have one around. I was told just to rebuild it as it might be more cost effective. Havent decided yet if I should just try and replace the synchronizers if I can or maybe just go with the rebuild. It's a 98 tj and I was quoted at 2200$ for a rebuild. Wish it wasnt so because I have so many other things I want to do to my tj to restore it. Whats everyones thoughts on this
If you are going to replace syncros, might as well do a full rebuild. You have to tear it all down irregardless. Have you rebuilt a transmission before? There are measurements that will need to be taken, and lots of small parts to track. Not saying you can't do it, just warning that it's more involed than just replacing parts.
If you haven't done it before, make sure you have the fsm, a press, and are very organized.
You can get a brand new AX15 for less then the quoted price of that rebuild however that quote may also include new clutch and labor to remove and install the tranny
Ya i didn't plan on doing it myself for i would have no clue what to do. Was going to have local shop do it. But it seems like it may be cheaper to just buy it new and have it installed. Really appreciate the link and the feedback. Thank you both
Some extra input, in case you were wondering!: I recently bought a newly-rebuilt AX-15 from a local shop for $900, no core charge (so I sold the previous transmission for $300)
Ya i wish I could find something like that in my area. That would work perfect especially with my budget
