Rebuilt my transfer case still grinding

I am a newbie to the board. I have a 02 6 cylinder automatic. When i shifted in and out of 4L and H I hard a grinding. I took the Jeep to my local mechanic and he diagnosed the transfer case as the culprit. All new seals, and shift rod lever the grinding is still there. He found the fix is to turn the Jeep off in neutral then do the shifting and was told this by other Jeep guys. Has anyone ever heard of this any help would be appreciated.

Can we have some more info on your setup? Do you have an SYE on your TCase? Also do you have a shift linkage relocation bracket?

Jack I am not sure what an SYE is? I am still learning the vehicle and the parts of it. From what I know its pretty much factory still. The grinding now only happens upon the tranny being in N and me shifting from 4L to 4H. (The shifting rod was bent and replaced all seals in the Tcase were also replaced) As the mechanic told me yellow to yellow in the shift lever.

Okay then we can assume that you do not have the two items i mentioned.

So you don't hear any noise during normal driving? Hmmmm, that lets out the shift fork being in backwards and since your mechanic rebuilt everything that lets out the planetary being in crooked also.

Are you trying to shift while in gear? If you are going into 4-lo you need to be in nuetral.
