i have a 2004 tj (4.0 inline 6) with a 3.25 lift and i am currently running 31s. i plan on going to 33s soon. i was wondering do i need to regear to do so and if so how much am i looking at spending. i wheel it maybe once or twice a month but its also my dd. i also wanted it to sound a little better so i was gonna put an intake in it. what would be a good intake to go with that can handle the elements ? not looking to spend to much and not expecting to gain a ton of horse power.
An intake will not make your jeep sound different. You do not need to re gear but you will lose some performance. 4.56 gears are the most recommended around here for 33's to get better performance. Cost. No clue.
4.56 is the right ratio for 33's with the 5-speed and 4.0l engine. I asked because if you had the 4-speed automatic, the correct ratio would have been 4.88.
And having had a 4.10 ratio installed years ago when I used to run 33's, I can only say it only took 2-3 days of driiving with the new 4.10 gearing to know I had made a mistake of not listening to everyone who tried to convince me to go 4.56... it was a big mistake I learned a huge lesson on gearing from. The 4.10's "worked" but not very well. I was always having to downshift for even the most minor of grades.
X2 though my last regearing was only $1087 when I decided to push harder for a bigger discount. There's a lot of margin in a gear job, they have room to negotiate and usually will unless they know they're only shop for 50 miles.
