Regearing/Locking vs. Buying Axle Assembly?

I'm putting 35's on my LJ soon, and plan on regearing shortly thereafter. I've read prices for parts and labor can push over $1,000. Eventually down the road I planned on getting lockers, I was checking out ARB.

I figured if I were to save and do both at once, it'd probably save me a chunk on labor...even still, the air lockers alone can run around $900+..

With brand new complete axle assembles with choice of gear ratio and locker going for around $2,850, including a 10 year warranty...plus the savings from whatever I could get from my old complete axle..would it just make more sense to get a new one?

Are there ever problems with aftermarket axles? I'm pretty sure I should be able to install that myself..given the right amount of time that is..

I think dollar for dollar its cheaper to build an axle yourself, I just bought an 8.8 with disc brakes, By the time I am done re gearing, install kit, new calipers and pads, break lines and an install kit, I am probably looking at around 8-900 bucks, and thats without a locker.
If your able, and up for the challenge, go for it yourself. If not your better off buying one and having someone else do the hard stuff..

Why would he want an 8.8 he already has a 44 in back...

Oh ok then. To the OP, I recently got both my axles regeared to 4.88 with master install kits, Ziplockers front and rear and 30 spline rear axles for about $2200. I couldn't have even gotten a rear axle for that much, I did get a smoking deal but I had to pull the axles out of the Jeep and take the bare housings in and then reinstall them. If you are going to drive in and leave it, it's a bunch more.

I agree with DevelDogDoc, your present axles are good candidates to be regeared and locked for 35" tires. I would not go with an 8.8 either... the cost and other issues associated with getting an 8.8 mounted into a TJ just don't make it a good choice in my personal opinion. Not to mention an 8.8 reduces ground clearance due to its larger pumpkin size and its pinion is offset to the side more which makes the rear driveshaft u-joints have to work harder.
