Remove Front Axle Shafts ?

Hello,

my front Diff has a big problem. It makes loud noises (like a destroyed outer pinion seal) and on the magnet at the diff dipstick was a bit of very small metal chipping.

I don´t want to damage it more, but I have to drive about 80 miles to the next shop thats able to fix that.

Can I remove the front axle shafts and drive without them to the shop? On that way the Diff would stand still in 2H like with lock out hubs.

How hard i it to remove the axle shafts? Is there a write-up somewhere in the internet?

Do you have another suggestion how i could drive to the shop without damaging the axle more?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Well you can do that but a car dolly would be better. To remove the axle shafts you need to take off the wheel, caliper, rotor and the remove the 3 bolts that holt the hub assebly on and then your axle will slide out thru the hole the hub ass was in.A pinion seal would not cause one to be makeing a loud noise though, maybe bearing but if that is the case and the carrier has cocked out of place from the bearing it is more than likely to late for the ring and spider gears anyway. But to be safe I would dolly it if at all possible or trailer it.

i have heard that without the axle shafts in place there is insufficient preload on the hub bearings. i probably wouldnt risk it. (they're pricey).

i would open the cover and see if theres obvious carnage and make a decision to drive it or tow it. the only cost will be that of the gear oil, and it wont take long to survey whats going on

Yes you SHOULDNT drive with out the outer axle shafts, Ive seen a few posts on people driving with out the shafts then losing a front wheel/hub. Its not safe, dont do it
