replacing rear axle shaft

i broke my rear axle shaft. i have rear locker and 456 gears i was wondering what i should do to upgrade it without breaking the bank so i wont do this again.

What rear axle do you have, a Dana 35c or Dana 44? That an axleshaft broke makes it likely you have the Dana 35c axle.

What size tires are you running and what kind of wheeling do you do? If you already have a Dana 44 you should be fine by upgrading to chromoly shafts. If you have a D35 and you do any real wheeling then an upgrade is probably in order. Your cheapest option is probably an 8.8 or a bolt in 44 from another TJ or LJ if you can find one at a decent price. If you're going bigger than 35" tires then you probably want to look into a 14 bolt or dana 60.

The only way not to bust the bank would be to run an upgraded stock shaft. However, with lower gears and a locker it might bust at some point as well. How much can you afford to spend would be a good start.

That what I was think about doing for nowand just save up and replace it axle later but I wasn't sure if it was worth it

The best axle upgrade for the dana 35 is the superior kit which gives you 30 spline shafts, and a locker. Run just under 1k as I recall plus install OR you could look into swaping in a TJ dana 44, or a ford 8.8 from places such as Drivetrain Specialists East Coast Gear Supply

Buy an alloy 27 spline shaft for now and carry spares, and then save for a new rear axle.

Do I have to put more than just gear lube when I put the axle shaft back in because of the locker or should just gear lube be good

Just a little gear lube on the splines is plenty, pour a little gear lube into the bearings at the outboard end of the axle shafts too.

At the part store they said I might need some limit speed lube stuff for my locker but the weren't 100% sure

No, not at all. Not many parts store guys have any personal experience with much of anything beyond changing their spark plugs, if that, and air fresheners. I asked my local Autozone guys for a pinion nut and out of the entire crew working there, none even knew what a pinion nut or pinion shaft was

The junkyards around here almost give away stock shafts for the d35 so I just carry a spare and swap it out if I break something.

I got an alxe shaft from quadratec and it has an abs ring on it and they say u can take it off. I tryed but it didn't want to come off and I didn't want to damage it so that I wouldn't be able to return it. What's the best way to get this ring off my axle shaft

You can leave the ABS tone ring in place, there's no need to remove it.

I dunno why you're so worried about getting that tone ring off, it doesn't need to come off at all for a non-ABS equipped vehicle. It can remain in place without any issues whatsoever.
