Replacing the dash lights

Most of my dashboard light bulbs are out and I want to replace them with LED blue light bulbs.
But here's my problem:
1) I don't no how many bulbs are back there, and there sizes? Can anyone help with this?
2) how do I get to them?
Thanks in advance.

There are 5...You have to remove the gauge cluster unit from the dash to get to them, it's not that hard, though. Pull the center defroster trim from the dash and start unscrewing the parts. You'll also have to remove the panel below the steering wheel to remove the lower screws if I recall right.
One caution is that the LED lights are polarity-specific. If you plug one in and it doesn't work, pull it and flip it around and reinstall, should work then.

Are all 5 the same size?

That is correct all the same size. Another bit of info I found out was that the exact stock bulbs are almost impossible to find, however a 194 bulb is a good replacement bulb for the stock socket. i ran to every auto parts store in town to find this out.

Been reading these forums for a while and finally decided to join. Y'all have inspired me to replace my dash lights with LED as well but I am going with red. I ordered the Matrix II from Autolumination Instrument Panel Light Bulbs & Lamps) I've already gotten the Daytona dash overlay in place so I'm just waiting on the bulbs to arrive and install. I'll post pics when I get it done.

I want to do red too so I can't wait to see these pictures. I've seen a lot of mods with the blue, but no TJs with red. I'm also wanting to add red LEDs under the dash and under to bench seat in back but controllable with a switch.

I have an '05 Wrangler X Rocky Mountain Edition. It's red and I did buy both red and white bulbs because I installed the US Speedo Gauge Faces Color Overlay (2005 Jeep Wrangler Custom Color Gauge Overlay, Color Gauge Faces, Gauge Face) Because it's an overlay, it was pretty dark with the stock bulbs underneath. I took the blue covers off the bulbs and that made it better but not bright. I bought white bulbs but I was afraid that the red overlay with white bulbs would make my dash appear pink. There is NO pink in my womanly but not girly world and that would have made me VERY unhappy! I bought the red bulbs just in case because I don't want to go ballistic if I see a pink instrument panel at night.

I promise to post pics as soon as it's done. Right now my instrument panel is in pieces waiting for the bulbs. I should have some by the end of the week.

Took off the US Speedo Daytona overlay. A total bummer even with five 5 bulb super bright white LED lights in the dash because I couldn't read the numbers on the speedometer at all. At least it wasn't pink but readable numbers would be good!
Now I am back to my original instrument panel but waiting on the red LED lights to see what they look like. I'm really hoping that looks as good as the blue ones I've seen pictures of!

That sucks. It sounds like you need a more directional LED than the ones you got.

When I was home and went from driving our 2010 dodge to driving the 2002 Jeep I couldn't believe how bad the dash lights are in just a few years. I was thinking of trying to upgrade, glad I saw this thread.

My only question is with the LED's in there are they still able to be controlled by the dimmer switch. I would imagine the load on the dimmer switch would be diffrent with conventional bulbs, just don't want the swap to cause any kind of electrical issues. Haven't had any since 2002 don't want to start now

I can still dim the LED lights with the dimmer. I bought the super white Matrix II from Autolumination Instrument Panel Light Bulbs & Lamps)

The new bulbs fit nicely in the existing sockets with a little pinch of each of the 4 prongs inside the socket. Without doing that, they felt kind of loose in the socket. The bulbs are polarized so if you put it in and it doesn't work, take it out of the socket and turn it around.

I will post the pics as soon as I get the red bulbs in!

Going to give another shot to the US Speedo Daytona overlay and hope I get it right this time. I really want that red face on my instrument panel!

I got the overlay installed with the help of a guy from US Speedo! No red bulbs because the entire face of the instrument panel was replaced with the red one! Awesome looking, I think.

hey guys,

I have a 98 tj and want to replace the dashboard lights. I just ordered some 194 bulbs from a local auto store and they did not fit. If i order those matrix II led's, will they work?

That's what I bought. They were a little loose but a pinch on the metal terminals on either side and they are solid fitting!

I went with the super whites on mine...

Very crisp, but not overly blinding. The 3-way LED lights provide an even distribution. If you have an overlay, you can still change the LED's, and the super white will keep it looking sharp.

A year ago I replaced all the bulbs in the interior with blue LED blubs. Here is what they look like:

Those are sweet! Did you buy those online or locally? What year Jeep do you have? I'm definetly going to get those. Any drawbacks?

Check out this website. It doesn't have all years, but I believe 2000 and up.

Go to this website. It has all the bulb measurements:

OSRAM SYLVANIA - Replacement Guide - Start

There was a great write-up by BLACKTOOTHGRIN if you are looking for instructions on how to do it:

http://www.wranglerforum.com/f5/inte...ing-25750.html

Everything you want to know is in this write-up, including where to buy everything. Make sure to buy spares in case some don't work, that happened to me. I hope this helps!

Online at superbrightleds.com (I think). It's been a while.

My TJ is a 97. These are the only lights I swapped. I did not replace the HVAC lighting. I couldn't find the LED light to fit in the HVAC w/o any issues, so I said screw it.

No drawbacks. It still dims a bit, but even on the bright settings, it's not a distraction at all. AND I still have all my colors on the needles and such.

I am trying to put in my first Matrix II bulb and it is fitting really loose. I tried pinching the two tabs on the side but that didn't work. I see where it says to pinch the four tabs inside the socket but the whole thing is hard plastic, how exactly did you pinch them

I pried the 4 clips in a bit and put the new bulbs in, half the gauge lights worked and the other half didn't. Brought it in, turned the ones that were not working 180 degrees and plugged it back in, same ones still aren't working. Brought it back in and put the original bulbs back in, still not working....

Does this run on one fuse or two, I would think it would be just one right...? The right side is the one that's out.
