Request for help - Squeak? From where?

Okay, so I've searched the forum and am just not sure where to continue my looking on the Jeep at this point. There's a squeak that occurs, mostly during shifting, but more noticeably if the shift is quick. I'm thinking that suggests a rubber mount(?) on the body or transmission/drivetrain. Maybe the body dipping from the acceleration? I've looked underneath and don't see anything noticeable like something obviously rotted out. I've stood and jumped on the bumper, but don't get the same squeak noise response. The Jeep has seen some mud and sand, but I think I've gotten it pretty cleaned up.

I'm not mechanically naive, have changed exhaust, added rails, etc at one point in time or another, but am definitely a newb on getting really into all the really "in the weeds" and such under the vehicle. Any help is appreciated in where to look next. I don't think it's a dangerous noise, but it's sure annoying and just in case, if it is dangerous, finding it now would obviously be best. Thanks!

Can you get it to do it, sitting still, and riding the clutch slightly to tweak the body/frame?

Couple of places to look. Obviously bushings like the sway bars. Mounts, maybe?
Also you want to check the T case shifter. Jeep has the mount for it attached to the T case itself on one side and the body on the other.

Shelby - Thanks for the suggestion. I couldn't get the squeak to occur while sitting still and riding the clutch to get body movement, so I guess that rules out that thought of mine. I'll get back under the Jeep and just start prodding away, cleaning (again) and lubricating, especially checking the bushings and mounts.

Well I can't find a thread off hand but my question is kind of similar. My tailgate squeaks when I hit bumps which is all the darn time! Any idea how to stop it before I weld it shut?
I wish I had some suggestion on that. I've been around Jeep's enough, but not quite enough to be able to pinpoint some of these little "fun" noises.

That's funny, my problem is at the front. Once the engine heat (or sitting in the sun) reaches the hood, the hood squeaks everytime I hit a bump. Im thinking the Latches stretch when warm and leave a bit of slack for the hood to move. Dosn't do it in the morning out of a cool garage. I for certain thought it was a bushing underneath the Jeep. I wiggled and probed everthing underneath. Thats about all you can do with a very annoying squeak especially if you know it could be wearing on something (besides your nerves). I only noticed one day about my hood when I backed it out of the Garage with the hood still up so I could Idle it with out Killing everbody in the house. I have about a 2" difference between the garage (concrete) and the driveway (gravel). I think I will replace the latches and see what happens.

As for any other squeaks, wiggle, tighten, probe and even spray a lubricant on anything that you might think is squeaking. It may take a moore permanent fix than that but if the sqeak stops at least you know where to start.

Just a story about "me squeak" and a few ideas. I'm certain other's have some as well. Now all I have to do is other maintenece while I wait for my new AX15 Transmission. The case broke on the old one right at the intermediate plate and is leaking like a faucet. Oh well. I love the smell of Royal Purple on the Garage floor in the morning :whistling:
TJWenatchee - I'm intrigued by your hood latch thought. I haven't been able to pinpoint temperature of the vehicle coming into play, but I'm going to really watch that this week. The noise from the driver's seat seems to be more front right, but I'm not sure if it's higher (like the latch) or low (some bushing underneath). And, of course, just start lubing away!

As for the tailgate, I would check the weatherstripping to make certain it's not too flattened out and letting the TG move. Try to lube the hinges if you can (I think there was a thread at one time on how one member drilled holes to let water out and to lube the hinge pins) and check them to make certain that they are not worn out and letting the TG move around causing the squeak. Or, just turn up the Radio.

Same thing was happening to me. Everytime I hit a bump it would squeak. It was driving me insane!!!

I finally tracked it down to the tire carrier. I tightend all the bolts and it was all set, never squeaked again.

I actually wound up taking the tire and the carrier off anyway.

Hope that helps
Thanks! I will try right now.
Nope didn't help they are all tight. Well two I am not able to tighten at all they just turn. Is this normal?
I wouldn't want to get a flat and not have a spare. Unless u just threw it in the back?

Sorry that didnt help.

I dont about the other two not being able to turn. That dosent sound good, but maybe somebody could chime in on that issue.

I removed it because my tailgate was not shutting properly so I wanted to see if that made any difference and maybe help with the problem (it didnt).

I am glad I took it off though cause I found some scuffs and gouges where it was rubbing. It was starting to surface rust which I was not happy about.

I do intend to put it back on after I address those issues.
