Reverse noises

Hi! I just bought a '98 Wrangler Sport about 3 months ago. When I put it in reverse it makes these loud knocking noises when I'm backing up. It runs great and I have had no other problems. The 'jeep expert' mechanic I took it to says that half of Wranglers do it and it's nothing to be worried about. Does anyone else have this problem?

Never heard of it. Don't go back to your "jeep expert' mechanic. He's either a fool or a liar.

Do you have a manual or an automatic transmission? Does it sound like it is coming from directly below you, or is is coming from in front of or behind you? I would say that this isn't normal, but we will need some more information to help you out more.

If you have to ask what it is or what it does, you don't need it, and you will need help to install it!

I have a manual transmission. I also have a 3in body lift with 32" tires. The loud popping/knocking noise is coming from directly underneath, inside the transmission it sounds like. Thanks for your help!

Your tranny should operate without any noises like that. I would take that to a reputable tranny shop, and have that looked at. Almost sounds like you have some teeth missing in your reverse gear.

sounds like that could be the problem if it doesn't do it in any other gears

Does it grind at all when you are putting it in reverse? Does it ever pop out of gear in either Reverse or First?

With that much body lift you could be having some clearance issues with the shifter.

Check your transmission mount and motor mounts. A loud knock when backing up is a good indication of a bad motor mount or tranny mount.

I too have a similar problem, 97 SE 2.5 5-spd. While backing up I hear a popping noice. If I push in the clutch, it stops. So I have to assume its in the tranny. I just haven't dug into it yet.

This is a great suggestion, and a good place to start.
