howdy all..... i just bought a 91 YJ Sahara with 31x10.5 tires and rims..... here is my issue.. can i put 33x12.5 tires on 10.5 rims... i know it will balloon the tires a bit and i know i have enough lift to put 33's on without rubbing..... just need to know about putting wider sized tires on thinner rims.... has anyone done this to theirs with any problems?? THANKS
Yeah, you can run anything that's a 12.50 on an 8" rim. However when most people start moving up to 37's they tend to also start increasing rim size to maybe a 17x9 or 17x8. 37's on a 15" rim leaves a lot of sidewall.

The biggest reason for getting larger diameter wheels after 37" tires, is because you would usually put in 1 ton axles at that point. To clear the brake assembly, it is preferred to go with the 16.5", or 17" wheel. Going with the 17" wheel will give you more choices of tire manufacturers. I have read about people that have shaved their brake rotors to allow for 15" rims. There is nothing wrong with a lot of side wall. Gives you more cush for the crawl. I have 14.5" wide tires mounted on 9" rims. The general rule of thumb is the width of the rim, will handle up to 4" wider of a tire. That of course can be strecthed a bit, if you use bead locks.
