Hey yall,
My baby is an '04 4.0 Sport with almost 99,000 on her. I bought it this past October, and it did have a miniscule leaking problem in between the bell housing and dust shield. I just replaced the rms and gasket this past weekend, and there's still a leak, and it's just a little bit heavier now. I checked the valve gasket cover and the oil filter o-rings, but it still looks like the rms. I bought the rms and gasket at O Reilly's (Felpro brand). I did hear that it's supposed to swell? I used rtv, so it was already a pretty flush fit. I'm just wondering if someone can help me out. I will provide all the info that I can
Thanks in advance!
So I was thinking I had a RMS issue as I have drops of oil on my garage floor. It was minimal, but I could see where the drop was coming from. However, shortly after flushing the radiator, I noticed a small, half dollar size, puddle on the floor. I looked under the jeep and realized the drip was coolant. Prior to the flush it, the fluid, was dirty and what I thought was oil was actually antifreeze. Researched it and found thanks to this forum, the issues surrounding freeze plugs. Of course this specific plug required pulling the transmission off to fix. A bigger job than I felt comfortable with, so I took to a local transmission shop. They pulled the tranny and replaced the plug. No drip. I followed some advice and bought the doorman plug (like $3) rather Han the cheaper. It cost me $450 to get the job done, but as I said, no drip. I started a thread, search Rear Freeze Plug, if you care to review the 10 or so replies.
You may want to be sure it is oil, not antifreeze. Hope that helps.
There are different perspectives on this, but did you offset the RMS when you did the install? I've used this method on the last two seals I did and had good results.
Offroad1, I don't think that I offset it, it was a home job. Just to get to my oil pan, I had to remove the starter, skid plate, and exhaust. The labor alone was gunna cost me at least $700 in shop. So I won't be doing this myself again, it took two days to do all this. I used rtv in the manual-designated places and the seals went in fine and very flush. There is a tiny amount of oil coming from the vcg, but not enough to be dripping down like that from the bell housing. I drove her around today and no problems, and the leaking seems to be lightening up ever so slightly. I wonder if it's just something that needs to settle or be "broken in"?
