Rubicon, Sahara Lockers

As a newbie I have several questions regarding upgrading from a Sport to Sahara or Rubicon. Does both front and rear lock on each model?

Please confirm that the 44 is standard only in the rear on the Sahara?

How dependable is the 4 speed automatic in the later TJ's?

Any advise as my situation is mud, mud, and more mud.

I'm fairly certain that the D44 was still an option on Sahara's. Rubicons however have a D44 front and back standard, as well as air lockers in both diffs.

Trak Lock limited slip was optional on Sahara.

I haven't heard any complaints about the 4spd Auto.

The 44 comes in the rear only of some sports and all Sahara's. Dana 44's come in both the front and the rear of a Rubi. No Jeep has front and rear factory lockers other then the Rubi. I think you might be able to get a rear locker for the new 07 Sahara but I am not sure of that.

Sorry dont know much about the auto tranny, I run the 6 speed.

Only problem I have heard of, with the auto tranny, is in steep climbs, the fluid runs to the back of the pan, and therefore stops your forward motion. I don't think that will be an issue, in the mud. As Scoob mentioned, the Rubi is the only Jeep with factory lockers. Lockers can be added to any Jeep though, so that might be your course of action. The D35c is not very user friendly, with the lockers, and larger tires.

All of my research says that in TJ's the Sahara did not have a standard D44, can you show me something that says differently? I'm not being argumentative, just curious.

Bottom line here legdoc, if you can afford to get the Rubicon, just get it. If you don't you'll just kick yourself later. If for no other reason, the re-sale value is a lot higher and so is the demand.

Just because of the sticker that says rubicon? ppft

If you have the money and want it fully loaded so you dont have to mod it much go for the rubicon, but if you want to do the mods your self I say go with what you like.

Just my opinion of course

To each their own. Personally, I found it much more financially responsible to spend 18,000 on 31" MTRs, Air lockers, 4:1 transfer case, 4.11 gears, D44 front and rear from the factory with 70,000 miles of warranty, than to spend 15,000 on a Sahara and spend upwards of 7,000 on mods to make it equal.

Fact is, you need to decide what your going to do with your jeep. If your going to end up on 44s with 1 ton axles and a custom suspension, get a base model 6 cyl, or even 4 if your gonna put in a V8. If you are just gonna toss on some 33/35/37s and go wheelin' casually, and can afford it, get the Rubicon. As long as you dont plan on changing out the axles or some other "rubicon only" part, its MUCH cheaper to just start with a Rubicon.

Also, please dont start with the "BUILT NOT BOUGHT" bullcrap here. This forum isn't that kind of forum. Not to mention, I still modify my Jeep, I still wave at other Jeeps, I still wheel my Jeep and get it scratched to shit on trees, and in point of fact, IT IS A JEEP. Don't start with the sticker envy

Exactly, I was not hating on the rubs I just personally would rather do the mods my self. (The sticker part was a joke)

and i'll re quote what I said for emphasis

It's what makes you happy, which is why I started with a stock 98 sport, so I can do mods and learn more about my new vehicle , I'm sorta Odhinns mechanic apprentice. I had a chance to get a Rubicon but I was lacking about 6 grand, and I wanted a title in my hand not a loan payment.

Like Rubi said "To each their own" and I totally agree.

I'm a new to to this forum but thought I'd jump on the band wagon.
I just bought a new 06 Wrangler X two weeks ago. I like the Rubicons a lot but I can't afford that payment. I just went with the basic jeep with a 6cyl engine and as time goes on I'll make the mods. I've been wanting a jeep for a long time, and I'm not planning on getting rid of it. For me, building as time goes on is fun and lets me share a closer bond with my jeep. As crazy as that sounds.

I bought my X model because:
1. It fit my budget.
2. I did not do any homework to make a better jeep purchase.
3. That jeep was just screaming at every time I drove past it.

Oh good! I thought I was the only person to have a jeep screaming at them! lol
I bought mine two weeks ago, and with the arrival of the 07's it was hard to find a TJ, and better yet w/ no miles on it. I couldn't be happier. Even for a stock jeep I have already gone places I didn't think I could get. With the lift and mud tires it will suit me just fine. for now...

Yeah I went that route as well, but only because they didn't make a Rubicon version when I bought mine. When I got mine I had a small list of things it HAD to have.

4.0
5 Speed
Full Doors
it HAD to be silver. I got one of the first silver TJ's. It was almost an entire year before I saw another silver one on the road. Which made me happy, until the Rubicon's came out and they changed to bright silver and then they were EVERYWHERE!

LOL that sucks. I like silver too, and looked at a couple, but I wanted red w/ black int. 6sp 6cyl. the rest I can add. I just really don't go crazy over the new body, I like the old school look.
