Rusted Fenders

Both of the fenders on my '97 Wrangler are severely rusted. My question is what can I do to get these fixed? I don't have pics on me so I will post them tomorrow, but it's far past the point that most people would recommend that I just get them replaced, which I would do, if they weren't so prohibitively expensive, new or used. Is it possible to do the cut and weld trick on fenders? The rust spots are located in the middle of the fender, and include the curved edge, which looks like it would be easy to screw up when welding new pieces, but frankly if it means saving myself a couple hundred bucks I'm totally willing to try. Is what I'm thinking of possible?

What do you consider to be "too expensive" for replacement finders?

The reason I ask is because I have a set for a TJ.

Depending on if your inner fenders are in good shape you could go with any number of tube fenders out there and there are flat fender kits too.

I have a set that I took off my wife's TJ and replaced. I bought new replacements for $110 each from a guy that supplies the body shop I work at...I snaked him down a bit, but it was a good price...anyway, I have the old set. I can take a pic of them for you. They have a few bad spots, but not too bad if you would be interested in repairing them. I was gonna fix them in spare time at the shop and re-sell them in my parents garage sale...just didn't repair em...

I found a replacement fender on craigslist for $125 (same color I needed). Now I just need to have someone install it!

Anything above 250 for both of them. I just haven't seen anything below ~$150 for one fender at all the local junkyards, which is just too much for me. BTW, what's a tube fender?

Jeep tube fenders

A lot is going to depend on where you're located.
SHipping might be the worst of it and if you got lucky enough to find some in the right color then you'd be a couple of steps ahead.

The ones I have are dark green, rust free.
I'd sell the pair for $250 plus shipping, but the wrapping and shipping might be like trying to put a cat in a wash tub.

If you thought you were SERIOUSLY interested, I could go shoot some pics and send them to you. Otherwise, I'm not gonna.

Wow, dark green? What are the odds? I suppose Tennesee isn't *that* far away from Michigan...yeah, go ahead and shoot me some pictures if you could, next paycheck I could probably take them off your hands.

Uhh... OK.
Let me just pick myself up off of the floor LOL
Really, your Jeep is green?

Ok, I'll go take some pics and get some measurements.

Here ya go...

1) the paint is cracked on the flares from where the PO stuffed a tire into them. The flares are ok, but do have a little warpage from that.

2) the wires on the lights have been cut.

3) Where there is a close up the one fender, it has a little bit of an pull on the hole from the removal of a flare extention or emblem or something. It is similar on the other side but not as obvious.

4) no rust on them that I can see.

The thought of shipping these has me a little concerned. We would certainly have fun finding boxes that will hold them. Boxes that big will likely weigh more than the fenders themselves.

Well they look 10x better than my current ones paint cracks don't bother me, the whole thing will be getting repainted at some point down the road. One question though, are the fenders removable? If so I would probably be taking those off as soon as I got them in favor of my black plastic ones.

The fenders don't have cracked paint, just the flares.

If by "removable" you meant the flares, yes they are, absolutely!
In fact, it would lighten them a wee bit for shipping if you wanted me to take them off first.

I've personally never been a fan of flairs painted the same color as the Jeep. Something too euro looking about it I guess.

If you're interested, shoot me a PM with your address in it and I can look into the shipping options. I'll look for the least expensive route unless you have something that you'd prefer.
