School me on radiators

On the 4th of July we had some trouble with over heating.

I changed the thermostat and everything seemed fine until this weekend.
Went down to visit Amy's folks south of Portland for weekend and had a bit of trouble. We got 200 miles into the trip and hit some serious headwinds along the Columbia river gorge.
The Jeep started over heating just like it did on the 4th. Unfortunately, this time we could only go about 15 miles, stop to cool off and then another 15 miles. We got to The Dalles Oregon, found an auto parts store and replaced the radiator cap thinking perhaps that the cap wasn't retaining enough pressure. This seemed to do the trick. It ran a little warm (about 215-220) but it didn't over heat.
We had a nice visit and then packed up to return home Sunday, got about 75 miles towards home and it started up again.
The trip usually takes about 7 hours each way. The trip down took 13 hours. The trip home took 14 hours, got home a little after 2am and had to get up at 8 to go do some paperwork for the boss. Needless to say I wasn't a happy camper.

So, the radiator is a wee bit crusty and is starting to seep at one edge, I'd like to find a good quality radiator at a decent price. anybody got suggestions?

ETA: 1999 Wrangler Sahara 4.0 manual with AC.

Radiators, automotive radiators, condenser, oem radiators, truck radiators

Got mine from them. Your stock radiator is plastic and metal. Mine lasted 150k then I replaced it with an all metal 2 row, from what I was told would be a bit better cooling. Didn't really notice a differance, still was at the normal 210 all day long. I will be getting one for the ZJ from them this week, another all metal and two row as I have the V8 with that one.

It's likely getting pretty clogged by this time which reduces its cooling capacity. I would doubly suspect that if it was not given a 100% distilled water and antifreeze diet its entire life. Using water from the garden hose to mix with the antifreeze is bad for a radiator because tap water is usually high in mineral content which allow calcium to build up inside the radiator and cooling system.

Unfortunately, while most radiators can be rebuilt to get rid of such mineral deposits, the TJ's OE radiator is not rebuildable so you're stuck buying a new one. Stay away from the 3-row models, they are not as efficent at cooling as a 2-row or 1-row radiators are. The more rows in the same space, the smaller the water channels have to be which for how a Jeep is used usually results in reduced cooling efficiencies.

What Jerry said.

The all metal 2 row from radiator barn is a good replacement. It is actually a CSF radiator. It is a complete replacement with no mods to be done to install it.

My Radiator from "the Barn" will be here tomorrow. Any tip, tricks, suggestions on the install? Can a person install by themselves? I got the two row all metal. My radiator busted at the top, ajacent to the cap. Has putty over the crack temporarily. People said i should also get a thermostat. what temp?

Not to many tricks...Just drain the old and unbolt it and bolt in the new.

It is always a good idea to go ahead and replace the t'stat. Factory 195* is what you want. The aftermarket 160* and 180* will not benefit the wranglers inline 6. It is designed to run at the hotter temp. So stick with the ol' 195*.

Also now is a good time to check your hoses and inspected them for cracking or wear.

Jerry, good to know about the 3 core, i would have thought it would be better, Thanks.
I tried selling water filters up here when I was a teenager. didn't go over well because we have some outstanding water, no hard water problems but I usually just get the pre mixed stuff anyway.
The problem we had was I tested the freeze protection last fall and it showed good so I didn't bother changing it out before winter, apparently the rust inhibitor crapped out sometime over the winter and things got pretty ugly.

Yeah anymore they just make one radiator for both manual and auto trans. Just plugged mine off and away we went.

FLush your system before you pull out the old radiator. I recomend Hyperkuhl flush and Hyperkuhl additive. Lucas oil product. Great stuff I recomend it. Not a problem and works great! Check it out at buylucasoil.com

They're all one core and can have a varying number of rows within that core. So just avoid the three row radiators.

another success story for the barn. everything went smoothly except for a little thermostat gasket problem that was solved with RTV silicone. had it installed within 2 hrs.

Its a good idea to flush the system before replacing. Reason being...You have crud floating in your fluid. that crud flows through the radiator, through the hoses, the engine block and head, heater core.

By flushing BEFORE a new radiator, you flush out the crud. And if any gets through to the radiator...its the old one. Swap in the new one when done with flush.

I don't care what products you use. I grabbed the prestone kit from my local shop.

As for the radiators...I got mine for my other jeep from dpgoffroad.com. They had (I believe) 4 core CSF radiators.

I bought the model with the auto tranny cooler. During the install, I put in two tranny coolers and routed all plumbing to them. I then cut my low pressure power steering line and routed/plumbed it to the tranny cooler in the radiator. Instant power steering cooler with external tranny coolers all on the 4 core.
