Serpentine belt problem

Ok so my alternator started spiking up to 19 volts on and off. So I figured what the heck I'll just go ahead and put in a new alternator. Got everything all set and went to loosen the serpentine belt......WHAT THE H*** NO TENSION BOLT ANYPLACE. Looked everywhere, nothing. Went to the web nothing there either. Anybody know what I got to do to loosen the belt tension to get it off. Its a 99 TJ with a 4 cyl and AC.

Serpentine belt

Bob look at the tensioner and you will see a square hole in the arm. Put a ratchet in that square and then release the tension by pulling on your ratchet. When you have released the tension remove the belt and let the tension go to full. Hope this helps.

I saw where it said to do this but I don't see a square hole anyplace (got a photo?) In fact both idler pullies don't even look like they have a tension spring on them. I have an Expedition and on it I can put a cresent wrench and loosen the tention real easy. But the TJ not so easy. Which pulley are you speaking of?

On my 99, you have to loosen the right idler pulley. (Looking at the engine from the front, the one on the right). You loosen the center bolt, then there is a bolt on top of the support that the pulley is mounted to. You turn the bolt, one way to tighten the belt and the other way to loosen.

There are several different ways they used to keep the belt tight.
My '03 - no square hole, but the tensioner idler has a 3/4? hex head. Grab it with a socket and flex handle, pull it back against the spring, slip the belt off.

Tip - hook a bungie cord around the belt to the fender to hold the belt on all the other pulleys - then you won't have to re-thread it.

But - be sure you have a map or drawing as to how it goes BEFORE you take it loose.
