Shift light coming on in 5th gear

I regeared the differentials in my 99 a couple weeks ago. The shift light was working the way it should until I changed out the speedo gear today. Now it is coming on when the rpms get over 2k in 5th gear, it is a 5 speed. Does anyone know how to fix this, or how it decides when to come on? I have searched google and most people say to just take the bulb out. I would rather fix it so that it works the way it should.

Thanks in advance

Mine comes on also, and I believe it reads engine rpm. I just don't worry about it anymore. You need extra rpm's with bigger tires.

I don't have an answer for you but maybe my experience will help spark an idea with someone. I had a SYE kit installed this summer and the kit had the wrong tone ring packed (and then installed) by mistake. The speedometer was reading about 13 times what it should so while doing some trouble shooting I drove it with the speedometer disconnected. During this time the Jeep stalled a couple times when making slow speed turns. More relevant to your problem my shift light would come on in fifth gear (the speedometer reading 0mph). Once the tone ring was replaced with the proper unit my problems both went away.

I pulled the light bulb when I had my cluster out. I don't need a light to tell me when to shift lol

I've got 33s on 3.73s and mine does not come on in 5th, no matter the rpms. Maybe its because I have an earlier model(98) tj?

I have a 98 as well and currently have the same set up. The light will come on ever once and a while, even when i was running stock set up it would tell me to shift up. I just dont pay much attention, eventually it goes away.

I'm running 4.56 5 speed and 35's my shift light occasionally comes at highway speeds or going downhill. I've never worried about it.
Not sure how the shift light calculates when to shift? Apparently it calculates shift points from engine rpm, vehicle speed and TPS or MAP sensor readings with an algorithm programmed into the PCM? Anyone know for sure?

Your light isn't broken, it's just stupid. The computer bases it on speed, RPM, and engine load. It has no actual knowledge of what gear you're in.

More likely because you're running lower rpm's at higher speeds than a 4.56 with 33's.

Mine did the same, after changing the speedogear, but after driving Wranglers for 23 years I almost donít see this light anymore. Also the problem went away after a few 100 miles, so I believe it has something to do with the computer system to readjust itself.

Mine never worked and if it did the bulb would get pulled immediately. If I need a light to tell me to shift I should not be driving a manual.

^^ yeah! but that's tacky (pun intended too)

It literally takes MAYBE ten minutes to get to the gauge cluster..
