Shifter hits console after lift

'06 "X" SWB.
2" OME lift, 1.25" BL, 1" MML

6-speed Manual

In reverse, the shifter contacts the console and I have to hold it down to stay in reverse. No other contact. Do I need to replace the shifter with a longer one, or do I need something else?

Just cut some of the tub out of the way or beat it back wth a hammer.

What he said ^^^^^ when you installed the body lift, you changed the space needed by the shifter to properly engage the gears in relation to your tub by moving it farther from the pivot point. With some trimming or some body work with a hammer, you should be all set!

It isn't the tub that is interfering and you don't have to massage the body to get the shifter to work properly. We always bend the shifter under the boot to put it back in place. You can also move the console back. Elongate the holes to allow the console to shift backwards a bit.

You can take the bolts holding the console to the tub out and feel the relief needed for the shifter. I've always just found it easier to remove the shifter and bend it a bit.

That sounds right. It's not the tub that's in the way, it's the console. Just take a hammer to it and hide the beating under tha boot. Thanks MC

I've found more civilized ways to bend the shifter without smashing it with a hammer. I take the shifter off the tranny and put it in our brake press. Other options are to heat up the shifter where you want to bend it. Another option is to break it over your leg. It has been my experience that hammers don't do well inside the tub.

Use of a hydraulic press enables you to bend the shifter in small increments and easily put it back in place to check it. I have also used a torch -- but not a propane torch as that takes a very long time to heat it up sufficiently to be able to bend it and the bends are not as precise as using a press. I wouldn't relieve the console as every successive change will require some adjustment to the shifter -- and I can bet that if you own a jeep this won't be the last change...

i don't think you don't need to move the console. i have 1" BL on my 06 six speed and its hitting the black ring around the boot. trim it some and i should be good to go.

It did on mine. All it did was change the angle/height of the shift rod so that it contacts the black rim of the console (like some of the guys above stated). I haven't taken anything apart yet, but it looks at first glance like I need less than 1/2" of clearance.

if you install a MML it shouldn't happen...

mine is an 06 six speed also and i don't have this problem (without MML) although it is very close to the black ring...which could easily be popped off and trimmed...or maybe even left off completely...

I think the MML actually makes it worse. That's what brings the front up, moving the shifter more towards the rear.

moved my console back 3/4". works perfect!
