Shimmy in 97 Wrangler

After retotating my tires my 1997 Wrangler has developed a terrbile shimmy at about 55 mph especially when you go over a bump. It is so intense you almost need to pull off the road and see what came loose. The tires are a little worn but do not seem to be out of balance. 120,000 miles

Any ideas or similiar experiences?

Thanks,
Tom

If the problem started when you rotated the tires, logically it must be the tires that are the problem. Most likely one of the fronts is out of balance or you have a bent rim, or a bad tire, and it was not noticeable when it was on the rear. Try putting the tires back where they were. That will tell you for sure.

check your steering stabilizer also, if its worn it'll give u that "mystery steer" effect. but chances are your tires are cupped.

you might also take it out of gear to eliminate driveline "shimmy"

Thanks Folks,

The tires are marginal so I will probably start there.

To me the shimmy was no different than what I would experience years ago in an old Ford truck. To my wife, it was call AAA and have it towed in. Wranglers are not good at 60 mph with one hand on the cell phone.

Thanks again,
Tom
