Slight clunk/bind when shifting into 3rd geer

I am in the market to purchase a TJ. I test drove one yesterday, which seems correctly priced but it had one issue of concern. When I shift into third geer from second I can feel a slight click/clunk. Almost as if I am hitting something just before the gear engages.

It only happens when shifting from 2nd -> 3rd. From 3rd->N -> 3rd it does not happen. Maybe it has something to do with the RPM's of the engine?

So what does everyone think? Minor issue or a major transmission repair?

I can't help you with an answer, but I will say my 99 TJ does this from first to second and only first to second. When I downshift from third to second, I don't seem to have the issue... You've described it perfectly and I know EXACTLY what you're talking about. That being said, from what I've heard/read, so long as you're not grinding, you should be alright. I say should only because that seems to be the general consensus around here. Next time I take it in, I'll have my mechanic take a look at it, but I'm not rushing to bring it in.

Sounds like the synchro is bad, I just rebuilt the tranny on my TJ at 110k and it was doing the same thing going into third and first because the previous owner rested their hand on the shifter in 2nd and 4th while driving down the road.
