I have even turn on the heater but no smell . have check the overflow holding tank no leak . Took it to shop they tell they have never seen this before they was fair they did not change me and they spent 2 hr trying to find some thing . only thing I think it may be is water off the silver tank that sweats when using the Ac maybe it drips on something hot and is do it . I am at a lost if any one out there has this happen please let me know or know where it coming from let me know .

If you can smell it is getting out some how. You say, you smell it only when a/c is used, I would start looking around the heater core for leaks.

How much needs added and how often?

Has oil volume increased any?

Hairline head crack that lets coolant slowly cross into oil was common enough on the 2000 4.0 to prompt a head redesign. Much less likely on an 2004 but I would change oil and examine the oil closely and watch for any increase in oil level on dip stick.

If coolant does enter oil it contaminates oil and can result in significant engine damage from inadequate lubrication.

Heater core was my first thought too. Do you smell it more inside the vehicle, or outside? Does your windshield fog up above the defrost vents for no reason? Do you get moisture on the pass side floor beneath the dash?

Check hose clamps to the heater core, sometimes if it very slightly leak, might seep into the heater box.

Thanks everyone one for all the tips I found it I pulled the radiator hoses and found like a calcium buildup where the hose connected back to the engine scraped off all the calcium buildup replaced hoses and clamps no smell a new radiator cap I think the smell was coming from the calcium build up that the steam was getting out around it thanks everyone for all your help
