smoke coming from up under?

Hey guys, just got back from a trail in Breckenridge, CO in my brother's jeep. Got into a tough spot on one of the side trails and had to kick it into 4-Low. It pulled through the tough spot easy but we started to smell something burning and then saw some smoke. We pulled off and looked underneath and saw smoke coming out of the transfer case, I believe. Also, the engine coolant was boiling and had shot out and hit the inside of the hood. We let it cool off for about 20 mins and then started back in 2wd and didn't smell anything nor did the engine temp raise although it appeared low.
So, just wondering if anybody could let us know what the problem may be there? Like I said, we could only smell it after we put it in 4 low.
Also, It's a '98 with the the I6 manual transmission. The 4 LO may not have been used often or at all recently. He's had the Jeep for just over a year and the only time he put it into 4 LO was when he bought it to make sure it would go into it. So, it hasn't been run in 4 LO in over a year, and depending on the previous owner, may not have been for several years.
Thanks for whatever help you can give!

4lo and first gear will give you a very low gear ratio
it sounds to me like you revved the engine up too high and it overheated, wihtout noticing because you thought you were going so slow, idn though seems like you would have heard it revving that high
