Soft top conversion?

I have a 98 with a hardtop right now...a cruddy gray faded soft top and frame came with it and resides in my garage at home. Im sure some of you are aware that im a college student so im cheap and dont have alot of resources to work with. My friend has an 03 and bought a sail top a few weeks ago. before we go making trips back and forth to each others houses, whats the big deal with soft tops and years? according to quadratec im not so sure itll work....

im not afraid to cut, bend, and weld some little stuff on the jeep... just thought i through this up before i have him drive 4 hours home and shove a soft top in his jeep only to drive another 4 hours if it wont work.

If I understand, you want to put an 03 OEM soft top on your 98?

If so, it will work just fine.

In the 03 model year, a change was made, so like most things, they are backward compatible, just not forward compatible.

New on old = Yes.

Old on new = No.

I thought the latching system was different on the 03+ years. I heard you would have to do some slight mods to the frame of the top to get it to work on the older tjs.

I didn't bother to measure or take pictures, but I sold my 2000 TJ to my son and had an OEM soft top from my 06 rubi that I wasn't using.

So, I gave him that for a xmas present.

Put it on, fit like a glove. No "modding" to the frame or any alterations required.

The top was OEM and included all the hardware MINUS the door hardware (the 2k has 1/2 doors and the 06 full doors). I'm pretty sure that the top would fit on the older hardware, but I didn't try that.

All 97-06 softtop frames will fit on any year. They are lots of people that have swapped all years of frames. I have an 01 on my 03.
