Soft top install

New 2001 TJ owner. On the fast track learning curve. Bought a new soft and new (used) hard top. Removed the old soft top from the frame and installed the hard top (on the spot, between downpours) when I got the hard top.

I understand the basics of a soft top install. Simple enough to do. Just make sure it is warm out.
Install option question..........
Has anyone installed a soft top without screwing it to the frame header?
This would allow the frame to stay in/on the jeep (folded down) with the had top on.

Anyone have any experience with this?

Thanks!

Harms_way,

We live in and travel a lot in our RV. TJ is going along as the toad (towed vehicle) 4-down for daily driver and toy. Want soft top for warm weather / put down ability. Hard top for cold/wet weather, towing and security.

Folded down canvas on frame inside hard top is a no-no, due to rubbing issues on fabric, plus it is really a tight fit! Storage of frame/canvas is an issue (limited space and it is bulky for RV storage bays).

Folded down frame will fit easily inside the hard top without canvas (done that). Canvas can be rolled/stored easily in a smallish space. This would be a win-win for me.

With the header/top clamped into place and the rear part locked into its channel is there any issue with the top coming loose/out?
Guess that is my real question.

I doubt it would work with the header attached but I don't know why you would do that even if it did work. You will have to store the HT anyways if you wanted to run the ST.

The removal, storage, and install of a ST is a non issue, especially with frame quick disconnects. It's the HT that's the main issue.

I'm in the same boat. I also pull my jeep behind the rv. If I understand you correctly, you want to leave the frame in the jeep and the top completely removed and stored in the rig. I don't see any issues. You are correct in not folding down and leaving the soft top stored. Just remove the 5 or 6 screws that hold the soft top to the header. With hard top removed I personally use a safari top during the day and a trail cover at night in the rv parks. JIC of rain.

So, back to my original question ...... Do I HAVE to screw the top to the header????

Guess I could remove the header from the frame, too.
