Angry Soft Top Problems

Hey Guys,

First timer at this...

I have just spent the last hour trying to get my soft top on, and it just seems that the thing is too small. I clipped in all the pieces around the door frames, body, etc and zipped the windows in. Now I am at the part where you hook the two hooks to the front by the windshield. The problem is they won't reach!

There is about 1.5 inches of clearance between the hook and where it hooks into. Where am I going wrong?

Also I am trying to get the clips out from the plastic door frames, to see if I can pull the top any closer, but I can't even get those out. What is the trick to pulling this out?

I am going go pull it into the garage for the night and have a beer, before I get any more frustrated and end up wrecking something.

If anyone has gone through this similar situation or you have any suggestions for a frustrated newbie, please post.

Thanks

on those clips
do u have the top "flap" of the clip extended all the way up?? this will allow for the clip part to extend down further

ok another question
i doubt it is 2 short

i always put my windows in last.. i dont know how much difference that will make but try to take the windows out..

i latch my back corners in then to the windshield part
the best time to do that is when it has been out in the sun so it is nice and warm and will stretch a little for you

I've seen where someone on here said that they like to lay it in the sun before they put it on because the heat helps to expand it. Other than that, I'm not sure. My YJ top is different.

it defiently helps if you have it in the sun... but even if not it should go on just fine

If it is a little chilly and I'm having trouble getting my top on, I usually push the rear bar forward to try and get the top to move forward as much as possible. Then I just push on the front part and it usually moves into place so I can get those front latches on. However, I try to avoid having to go through the trouble of putting a cold, shrunken top on by making sure I put it back on while it is still warm out. You can always ride around with just the windows out because they're easy to put back on.

It should literally take you no more than 15 minutes to put up your top... windows and all. Once you know how to do it it's super easy:

- Raise top and attach clips to top of windshield but DO NOT clamp down. Make sure to extend top of clip all the way up and bottom of clip all the way down for proper fit.

- Slip plastic pieces above doors into door surrounds until they are tight.

- Attach plastic pieces on rear of top into tub-channel by tailgate.

- Clamp down clips to top of windshield

- Install windows

DONE

Hi everyone,

Thanks for all the help. Your instructions were extremely helpful. It took me a few tries to get the hang of it, but I am no longer frustrated with putting up/down the soft top.

I have a few quick questions. What is the best thing to do with the windows? I have just been leaving the back window in and folding it back, as for the sides, I have just been putting them into rear. Is there anything wrong (IE potential to damage) them by doing this?

they'll eventually end up scratched and foggy, but other than that, there's no reason not just just tote them with you in the back. i like to take mine inside so the plastic is clearer longer, but that's just me.
