Can you repair the tear with a sewing needle and monofilament fishing line?

mine is doing the same thing right now its very frusterating I know, what I did was zip that bad boy up as best as I could and I had .030 safety wire so I just pretty much sewed it up where its coming apart and tighten it down with safety wire pliars, and I just keep my window on and still fold down my top

i think leaving the window on will work for now.not enough material next to zipper to sew without gumming up the zipper.thanks

Yes it will scratch it to hell. It's probably because the previous owner did not want to fix the zipper.

what's a good permanent fix for the back window problem. the back window has no scratches at all on it right now. does that mean that he probably never lowered it?

Buy a new top. They're not that expensive.

Alstjruby: I have the same problem and today the zipper just completely broke off. Cheapest thing I've done about it so far is take out the windows .

I bought my LJ 10 days ago, and the zipper of the back window fell apart (corroded to hell) when I took the back window off. The zipper portions on the actual top broke also. The dealer bought me a new top, sans windows (didn't know they came that way...) and are sending out the windows to get re-sewn (rips and stuff also), and also to have the zipper repaired. So yeah, second the canvas shop suggestion. For that price, it'd be worth it compared to folding it into the top.

Our customer service department (800-845-3567) has the name and number for a company that can sell you the right zippers and matching fabric. (B&D or something I think, but I can't remember). They can also sell replacement panels for most tops, but it's not a cheap option.

Zippers are frequently repairable, so I'd agree with the local boat canvas shop idea.

Of course, I REALLY like Alstjruby's idea of just buying a new one, too.

And, I just realized that you didn't actually say it was from Bestop. How arrogant is that? If the top is ours or from the factory we can help.

Cheers!

Same thing happened to me today. I took the back window out and went to zip it back up and the pattern of the zipper got messed up. Finally got it halfway fixed. But i think a new back window would be best to get.

Does anyone know what that will run? It's the factory soft top, 2003 Wrangler X.
