something isn't right!

Ok, when i'm driving down the road my jeep is fine, when i let off the gas, to slow down or whatever, it starts to jerk back and forth really bad. My check engine light usually comes on also. It seems to do it less when I am low on gas, and when i fill it up, it seems to be worse. It seems to not want to start as good as it used to. I start it and it chokes and sputters and i have rev it up to clear it out. Any suggestions/comments?

what engine code is it throwing that will most likley be the key to fixing the problem. you can either go to autozone to get the code read for free OR try the key trick.

It's a 98 4.0 and forgive me, I don't know much about jeeps, so i don't know about codes and stuff, you'll have to explain the code read and key trick, sorry.

local discount parts stores will sometimes scan for free and tell you the code, but don't buy the parts they think it is, they don't know what they're doing.

does the key cycle work on tj? i'm not sure, but if you cycle the key from off to on 3 times ending in on, the light will blink, count the blinks. first set of blinks will be seperated by a pause, first set is first digit second set is second digit. but this might only be pre obd2 cars. obd 2 are 3 to 4 digit codes, but maybe they have a 2 digit code for this that will translate. not sure.
