Hey guys, I have a nother question for you guys with alot of experiance.
I have a 2000 Wrangler with the stock rims which the bolt pattern is 5 on 4.5, right? Well the rim and tire package i got is a 5 on 5 I believe. They are take offs on a 09 wrangler with 255/75/17 BFG MT's. My question is should I just get wheel spacers, or buy another set of rims? I keep looking for rims but can't find any that are 17" rims with the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. What is your suggestion?
Thanks, Jeff
the spacers suck, there's many here that will tell you how they've come loose on them, and i've seen many problems myself. they are a bad idea. and a few people here said they're ok, after they came loose, and they loctited them. i would never use them, but if you do, loc tite the adapter to your studs.
I would get wheels with the right bolt pattern. I personally woul not run 17" wheels with any tire smaller than a 37" but if you really want 17" wheels, you can find them with the required 5x4.5" bolt pattern. I am no fan of wheel spacers.
Ok stop picking on me because I have spacers :flipoff:
but seriously I've been running them for three years and have had no problems, but my wheeling is light and no rock crawling.
Also if I had the dough i would change out to rims w/correct back spacing.
I have wheel spacers and max backspacing on the rims. When I researched it on this forum (I think last year) ... I had several people PM me and advise that many of the stories about wheels flying off are unsubstantiated (big word for no evidence). That's not to say it has never happened but it is rare. If you do proper maintenance on your Jeep you should be fine with spacers. I also checked with my mechanic who used to race alot, and he ran spacers on the track, and never had issues (probably a little different).
Has anyone ever heard of wheels coming off, first hand, as a result of spacers?

:wavey: yep, i'm a mechanic, seen it, had to fix it. guy named moa on here has had them loosen up. its more of loosening up, wobbling like crazy...if you're dumb enough to keep driving till it falls of you deserve whatever happens. also, i see more of a problem w/ daily driver, not trail or race rigs.
My problem isn't that I believe the spacers will necessarily come off, but you do now have 40 vs. 20 lug nuts to torque and the cost of many aftermarket spacers like from Spyder is not much less than the cost of new steel wheels with less backspacing that would not require spacers.
I have a catalog from Quadratec and I saw the price of spacers, and I still paid less for my rims. My rims have 4.5 back spacing and I may stand corrected but the stock rims are 5.5.
Definitely true. I seem to remember not being able to find the black steel wheels I wanted with the backspacing that looked right (not to tall and top heavy).
Well I have to have 17's as thats what the tires are mounted on. Where can I get these cragar soft 8's in 17's for $40 a rim? Also like I said before I can't find rims that are 17's with the 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern. I think the reason manufactorers (sp?) do this is because they know the new bolt pattern is a 5 on 5.5 and most come stock with the 17's. Does anyone know of a few rims that have the bolt pattern I want in 17's?
Thanks alot for your guys opinion, I am still not on 1 side of the fence as to get spacers or rims yet. Help a guy out in making a decision by seeing how much a set rims will run me.
Thanks, Jeff
