Speedo

My speedometer stopped working. I'm not sure, but I'm thinking it's the part that's attached to the trans. I replaced the actual gear inside but it slipped out without any effort at all. (I'm thinking it's not staying attached and thereby not giving any reading?)

Did you make sure that it is rotated for the correct number of teeth for the gear installed?

Well the problem seems to be that the parts don't snap together. When you place the gear shaft into the external unit, they just slip right back out. I had to fish the old gear out of the tail unit...

But in answer to your question, yes.

Has anyone else had that as an issue or is it more likely elsewhere?

Pull the sensor from the transfer case, make sure the gear is properly attached, clean connections and re attach.. Usually it's the sensor that makes the trouble or the cluster

I ordered a replacement transmitter (only $17 from partsgeek) so I'll check the difference in the attachment (maybe it's just the transmitter is cracked or something)

Turns out it was the gear housing... I ordered one from a junk yard and had the thing in and working in 5 minutes. I visually inspected both the old and new housing and although I couldn't see any visible difference, the gear snapped into the new housing and just slides in and out of the old. Weird but it works!
