Changing Your Jeep Speedometer Gear

This link is a "how-to" and also contains a chart to aid you in determining what speedo gear you should need based on your gearing and tire size.

yes go with the o-ring, if you look at the speedo gears on quadratec.com they will have a link sending you to the right sized o-ring.

Get the o-ring from the dealer where they're only $1-1.50 or so. It's the larger diameter o-ring that seals the speedometer gear housing to the t-case you need. It's something close to 1.5" to 2" in diameter IIRC. By the time Quadratech rapes you over the shipping charge, you'd end up paying a LOT more for the o-ring than you should.

Be prepared for a heart attack when you get pricing for a new speeometer gear, Jeep recently raised the price for speedometer gears dramatically. I remember paying $13 for my first replacement speedometer gear for my TJ years ago but they now list at a whopping $105 or close to that. Your dealer may or may not discount that down to the $70-something price they offered me when I called to verify the current price a few weeks ago.

I was only sayng Quadratec's prices are normally sky-high on shipping, and usually higher than usual on product pricing. But if you can get the speedo gear from them for only $25 and the o-ring is only $2.00, go for it. That $25 is a very good price if it's still available.
